Douglas W. Flatt passed away in peace on November 29, 2010. Doug was born June 11, 1929 in Fargo, North Dakota to Mike and Rea Flatt and grew up on the family farm in Sheldon, North Dakota. He graduated from North Dakota State University with a degree in civil engineering. After graduation he served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. While stationed in Denver, he met Janet Higgins and they were married on August 2, 1953. Doug and Jan moved to Topeka, Kansas in the fall of 1954 to work on the design and construction of the Kansas Turnpike. He co-founded Cook, Flatt & Strobel Engineers, P.A. in 1961 and served as its president and CEO until his retirement. Doug was involved in many civic and professional organizations including Sigma Chi fraternity, Arab Shrine, Arab Boaters, Royal Order of Jesters Court 125, and Kansas State Board of Licensing-Architects, Engineering & Landscape. He was a long time member of Countryside Methodist Church in Topeka. He served on the board of UMB and as president of Topeka Country Club. He also was a member of La Quinta Country Club in La Quinta, California. Dougs passions were his family, golf, being with friends and growing his business. He will be remembered for his positive attitude and the zeal with which he approached both his personal life and his business endeavors. He was both a devoted family man and a trusted business partner. Doug is survived by his loving wife, Jan; his children, Cathy Goodger (Tim), Lake Quivira, KS, Steve Flatt (Sherryll), Double Oak, TX, and Tim Flatt (Laurie), Overland Park, KS; six grandchildren, Chris Goodger, Scott Goodger, Drew Goodger, Chad Flatt, Mallory Flatt, and Allison Flatt, two sisters, Betty Corwin, Tucson, AZ and Nancy Loftis, Horseshoe Bay, TX and a brother, Jack Flatt, Bend, OR. Jan, you may not remember me but I know that you know my parents Hugh and Eileen in La Quinta. Their sorrow is with you today as they have just learned of Dougs passing . It was ironic that two couples would relocate to Palm Springs from east central Kansas and end up next door neighbors. My parents enjoyed your and Doug's company and friendship over the years and wish everyone in the family our best.

Jan,

We were so sorry to hear that Doug passed. He was a good friend and always a joy to be with. We, and all of his fellow La Quinta C. C. friends, will miss him greatly. We hope that time will quickly assuage your sorrow and we look forward to seeing you soon at the Club.

Dear Flatt family,

It is never easy to see a loved one called home to be with his maker. However, please take comfort in the last 3 words of the sentence, "with his maker". How glorious it must be to be with the angels, to dance amongst the stars, to be with The Creator! Doug now has a new Birth Date! God has called Doug home to be with past and future loved ones. Yes, by future loved ones I mean "us"! This is a moment in time that is stricken by grief, but is also a time to celebrate. Celebrate Doug's life, his accomplishments, his passing on to a greater place, and the promise you will see him again someday.

Penny and I did not know Doug very well, but we have been blessed to know his wonderful son Steve, incredible daughter-in-law Sherryll, and his awesome grandson Chad for many, many years. It is the love, care, and nurturing in our developmental years of one's parents that help define who we are. It is clear Doug was an example of someone to be admired and loved, and Steve is a lucky guy to have had him as his earthly father.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time.

In God's Love,

Brad and Penny Denney
