Layton Long Obituary

Layton Long Osage City--Layton Long, 82, passed away on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at the Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. He was born on February 27, 1935 in Iuka, Kansas, the son of Gleason and Frances Shelinbarger Long.

After living in Iuka and Emporia, Layton had lived in Osage City most of his life.

Layton graduated from Osage City High School in 1953. He worked as a mechanic most of his life, for Davenport Equipment, Dave Dorr Motors and in 1959 bought the Olson-Long Garage. In 1977 he purchased the Osage Auto Supply. In retirement he became a cowboy for the Porter Ranch near Emporia. Layton served in the Army Reserves, was a member of the Osage City United Methodist Church, 55-year member of Lions Club, member of Bass Masters, member of the Osage City Fire Department, serving as Fire Chief for a time and was a Baseball Coach for several years.

On October 18, 1953 Layton was married to JoAnn Jackson in Osage City.

Layton was preceded in death by his parents, Gleason and Frances and by his brother, DeLayne Long on May 29, 1991.

Layton is survived by his wife, JoAnn of the home; his four children, David (Glenda) Long of Louisburg, Debby (Gerald) Fagan of Osage City, Dan (Jennie) Long of Osage City and Deanna (Jim) Davenport of Osage City; his two sisters, Beverly (Roger) Bard of Waynesville, N.C. and Linda (Clyde) Jackson of Osage City; ten grandchildren, Julie (Aaron) Cain, Brad Long, Gerad (Debbie) Fagan, Derek Fagan, Colton Fagan, Connor Fagan, Jake Lahr, Faith Long, Amanda (Spencer) Johnson and Adam Pollman; and six great-grandchildren, Jenna Cain, Wes Cain, Jack Neale, Kolby Fagan, Aiden Fagan and Bentley Fagan.

Funeral services for Layton will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, December 14 at the Osage City United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Osage City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Wednesday in the church fellowship hall. Memorial contributions may be made to K.C. Cares for Kids(this supports children who are fighting cancer, as Layton's great-granddaughter, Jenna Cain is in her second battle with cancer). Memorials may be sent in care of Feltner Funeral Home, 818 Topeka Avenue, Lyndon, KS. 66451. Online condolences for the family may be left at feltnerfuneralhome.com.

I am sorry for your loss. We loved Layton. He reminded me a lot of my own Dad. He was always kind to all of us. I could always count on Layton to find a horse for me to ride when I was a kid. Layton was very special. Prayers to all the Family and Friends

I was so sorry to read of his passing, he was always a kind and pleasant man who was generous of his time and spoke lovingly of his family whenever I saw him. My sympathies to the family for their loss
