Horace Slay Obituary

Horace Slay

Clinton

Horace Slay, 89, of Clinton, Mississippi, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, January 3, 2016.

Horace was born June 19, 1926 in Carthage, Mississippi. On January 26, 1946, he married Janie Scott.

Horace is survived by his wife of 70 years, Janie; his son, Horace Scott "Scotty" Slay, Millie Slay; four grandchildren, Horace Scott Slay, Jr. and his wife, Kelli of Clinton, MS., Robby Lofton and his wife, Amy of Brookhaven, MS.,Hunter Slay of Oxford, MS., and Michelle Delehanty of Fairview, NC.; five great grandchildren, Evan, Scottlyn, Trent, Shelby and Braxton; two brothers, Kenneth Slay and his wife, Jackie of Terry, MS and Rodney Slay of Terry, MS.

Horace was preceded in death by his parents, William Robert Slay and Maye Cannon Slay; his brothers, Curtis, Glen, Robert "Bob", Drewie, twin brother Morris, and James "Jimmy"; and by his sister, Mary Slay Carr.

Horace worked construction in his younger years and built their family home alongside his father and father-in-law.

He began his lifelong career in the car business in 1952 where he became a used car salesman. In 1954, Horace, along with brothers, Glen, Bob and Drewie, opened Slay Brothers Inc. on State Street in Downtown, Jackson, MS.

On June 10, 1960, Horace established Horace Slay Auto Sales with $800 of his own money and borrowed $2,000 from his aunt. He had no idea that he would be creating a landmark in downtown Jackson, MS. Although Horace is well known for the "Little Red Corvette" atop the sign at 999 South State Street that is not how those who knew and loved him will remember him. Horace was completely unselfish and generous, always eager to help those in need. He loved his family with all his heart and would often say, "I wouldn't take anything in the world for being with you all."

Visitation will be at Lakewood Memorial Parks and Funeral Home in Clinton, MS. from 6:00 until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 and Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 11:00 am with Funeral Services beginning at 12:00 noon.

I didn't know Mr. Slay personally. I'm from Greenville and even as a kid I was a corvette fanatic! My favorite place to go when we went to Jackson was Horace Slay Auto Sales. They probably hated to see a 10 year old "shopping" their lot, but they were always gracious! Thanks for the wonderful memories Mr. Slay! Very Sincerely, Paula Jeter

My Uncle Horace was a good man and I have so many warm-hearted memories of him and his kindness, benevolence, and generosity towards me and my family. I consider it a great gift to have grown up next door to him and my aunt. I love him deeply, beyond what words convey, and only the measure of time can convince and the heart can feel. Words are not adequate, but it brings me comfort to know that suffering, pain, and sorrow are no longer a part of his life, and that he rests in the eternal peace that passeth all understanding---in the Majesty, Glory, and ineffable Grace of God, forever, without end. May my uncle's family find peace in remembering his life and knowing the eternal peace where he now abides. Wanda Woodward, Memphis, TN
