Robert Kochtitzky Obituary

Robert Boone Kochtitzky

Okeechobee, FL

Robert Boone Kochtitzky, better known as Bob or "Mr. Bob" to the kids in the neighborhood who couldn't quite handle the last name, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2016 in Okeechobee, FL due to complications of Alzheimer's disease. Not originally from Okeechobee, Bob spent most of his life in Jackson, MS, where he worked tirelessly to better the state and to protect those he felt were being discriminated against or weren't in a position to protect themselves. He was very fond of the quotation from George Bernard Shaw: "You see things; and you say 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say 'Why not?'".

After attending both Millsaps College and Mississippi State University, eventually graduating from MSU with a business degree, he joined the Air Force during the Korean War. Upon completing his military service, he entered seminary at Southern Methodist University and received a Masters of Theological Study.

Returning to Jackson during the height of the civil rights struggle, he started an organization called LAOS or Laymen's Overseas Services to help place volunteers into service projects all over the world. During this time he also served as one of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party "replacement" delegates to the 1968 Democratic National Convention. After his house was bombed by the Klan for his efforts on behalf of the civil rights movement, Bob moved his family and his organization to Baltimore and then Washington, DC. In DC he decided to embark on a new mission, founding a group called Alternatives to highlight the over-commercialization of holidays and celebrations leading to a loss of true meaning in these events. Alternatives published an Alternative Celebrations catalogue designed to highlight new ways to commemorate birthdays, holidays, etc. - from hand-making gifts to donating to charities that were meaningful to those involved in the celebration. The Catalogue eventually saw more than 150,000 copies printed and was featured nationally on the Phil Donahue show.

Bob and his family returned to Jackson in the mid-70's where he founded a series of non-profit organizations aimed at improving the quality of life in Mississippi and throughout the country. The challenges ranged from recycling non-renewable resources to energy efficient building practices. He helped found the city-wide recycling system that is today the current city-run curbside recycling program and was involved in the creation of the city's first Green Habitat House on Central Ave. in Jackson.

In the final phase of his professional life, he began to focus on environmental education issues, particularly those that involved and impacted children. He founded the Mississippi 2020 Network (MS 2020), aimed at deploying 20/20 vision toward those environmental problems likely to damage the world by the year 2020. Under the auspices of MS 2020 he created the EcoScore Program, the Clean, Green, and Healthy Schools Project, and the Our World Discovery Project (later renamed the Growing Good Citizens Project.) He also created the Mississippi Sustainable Futures Awards to highlight the groundbreaking work of other Mississippians. In recognition of these and other efforts to create a safer and healthier environment for Mississippi's children, he was asked to serve on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Advisory Committee on Environmental Education.

A lifelong United Methodist, Bob was a member of both Wells and Galloway United Methodist Churches in Jackson. He is survived by his sister, Carolyn Willett; two children, Chris Kochtitzky and Michele Cracchiola; Michele's husband, Joe Cracchiola; and two grandchildren, Gavin and Kenzie. A celebration of his life is being planned for later this summer in Jackson. For those wanting to make memorial gifts, the family is asking that donations be made in Bob's name to any of the following: the Mississippi Center for Justice (www.mscenterforjustice.org), the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science Foundation, 2148 Riverside Drive, Jackson, MS 39202, or the Mississippi Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 855 S. Pear Orchard Rd., Suite 501, Ridgeland, MS 38157.

I consider my self a mentee of this extraordinary, courageous, visionary man. While we both lived in Jackson in the late 80's and 90's,through many, many conversations he educated me for the great need to advocate for protection of our ecosystems and value of practicing sustainability. I will never forget Bob and how much he contributed to making this a better world now and for future generations.

See my comments on Bob in his book above. I also mourn the passing of my dear friend, Chris, who was my student and community livability CDC mentor along with his dad. Missed and not forgotten. RIP, Chris. Join your dad singing the praises of Mother Earth in the heavens.

I was one of two students from St. Paul's Methodist Church in Kensington, MD, who went to Jackson, MS, in the summer of 1965, with Bob's sponsorship to work at the Bethlehem Centre. My friend, Bob Snider, worked with the children on the playground. I was the music teacher. Later, when the centre closed for August, Bob got us positions working in the HeadStart pilot project in all black centers. It was a life changing and life enhancing experience. Bob was committed to us and the work we were doing. He was a principal teacher in my life. I went on to earn a degree in social work, had many fulfilling life experiences and have always been very grateful for the impact he had on my life.

Bob and I were in seminary at SMU together. As I, and other students looked around for leadership in civil rights, he was doing it. His zeal and courage set an example of love and justice for us all. Still does.

I knew Bob for about the last ten years of his life. His friendship enlarged my life, the height, the depth, the breadth of it. I went places I would not have gone; I met people whom I would not have met, and I learned things I would not have learned. He was an inspiring and challenging friend.

A huge loss. Bob changed my life over 40 years ago with his "person-affirming, life-supporting" Alternate Christmas Catalog". I have been involved in fair trade ever since. I am forever grateful for how he lived and tangibilitated his faith.

I am very sorry for all who lost this wonderful man. I'm not certain of my exact relationship to him, but my maternal grandmother was a Kochtitzky.

From what I read, he must have been truly a great and blessed person!

We too were neighbors on Woodsia Lane raising our family. We especially remember you Kris as a most remarkable young man who worked as a Carpenter one summer!

A book that may resonate with your sad hearts is In Lieu of Flowers.

We thank God for sharing your Dad with us for a season and commend him to the New Jerusalem!
Love!

Chris was one of my graduate assistants at FSU many years ago. He introduced me to Bob, who insisted that I be a speaker on livable cities at one of his first MS2020 programs. What a host! I arrived the day after a terrible hailstorm and he put me up in his pastor's home. I learned that that hailstorm was a metaphor for Bob's mind, constantly bombarding his friends and followers with a virtual hailstorm of ideas. He showed me his house (library/bookstore) and I knew why I stayed at the pastor's house! No room in the library! Later I invited him to speak at our FSU Department of Urban and Regional Planning Special topics seminar. You could not hear Bob speak with his energy and enthusiasm...and optimism, without becoming a disciple. Chris, my friend: I truly share your loss. My condolences. Know too that Bob is leading a seminar about just how to make heaven a more sustainable, and loving place, and cheering us on as we save the planet. Please let me know when the celebration of his life and spirit with be held and I will try to attend.

I met Bob when I lived on Woodsia Lane in Jackson. Bon lived on the corner and we were 2 houses up Woodsia. Bob and I would ride around the neighborhood in his flatbed truck and pickup recycling. I felt very honored to have known Bob.

My condolences go out to Bob's family and friends--and to the world. I was a freshman at Millsaps in 1968 when I met Bob. He was such a witness to what it means to live the teachings of Jesus. I have always held him is great esteem. The world has lost a great soul who dedicated his life to making the world a more just and peaceful place for ALL God's children. What a legacy he leaves for us.
