Charles Pinkston Obituary

Charles Franklin Pinkston

Memphis, TN

On Sunday, June 4, 2017, Charles Franklin Pinkston D.D.S. closed his eyes and went into a peaceful slumber. Dr. Pinkston was a retired Dentist who opened the first dental practice in Orange Mound in 1957. He is survived by his loving children, Toya McLaurin (Joseph), Lloyd (Connie), Carmen, Bonnie, two granddaughters, Kyla McLaurin and Sophia Dawson, a brother Howard Pinkston Sr; sister-in-law, Joyce Pinkston; two sisters, Annette Thorpe and Pauline Oden; the Orange Mound community and a host of relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Ida Maria Jones Pinkston, his parents Dr. Greene Fort Pinkston and Penella Horne Pinkston, sisters Sarah Brown, Bernice Williams, Mary Pettus, and brothers Wilbert "Ben" and Garland Pinkston.

For Dr. Pinkston, the most important things for him, were family and education. He imparted those same values to his children along with a strong faith in GOD. His values and love of dentistry was a testament to his 57 plus years of service to the Orange Mound community.

The family will hold a memorial service at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 1169 Kerr Avenue, Memphis, TN 38114, Thursday, June 8, from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. The order of service will be the Rosary at 5 p.m., Omega Service at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Connecting Links service.

I would like to express my sincere condolences to Toya, Nick(Dude), Carmen and Bonnie. Our families have been very close for years. I enjoyed your fathers wit, wisdom and company during that time. He made me feel part of the family. On the numerous times I came to Memphis to visit, we would all go down to Tunica for a meal and gambling. It was fun watching him play the nickel slots for hours. During those times he would impart some of his years of wisdom on me while never missing a beat pulling that handle. One day while he was visiting LA, I got to give back some of that fun he shared with me by taking him and Carmen up to Hamburger Hamlet up on Sunset Blvd. We were seated in the Tap Room which was normally reserved for the old stars of Hollywood. There were some there at the time and he enjoyed seeing them and eating the bowl of Chili he ordered, professing that it was one of the best times he had ever had in LA. He made me feel special all the time, but I knew that he always made everyone feel special. A wonderful husband, father, Dentist, mentor and friend. I will miss him deeply but I will treasure the memmories.

To the Pinkston family we send our condolences to you. Dr. Pinkston was our dentist for many years. He will be truly missed by us. Although after retiring, he turned our care over to his daughter Dr. Dawson, we still would see him roaming around the office during our dental appointments. You will be in our prayers. May God Bless You, Halbert and Linda Pickens

I genuinely don't know what I could say to make this time any less tragic.
As the child of a Memphis physician, I recall when I lost him 21 years ago, and I cannot say the deep sadness ever completely heals.
Please just know my heart cries for all who loved him, and I certainly hope you have support, through others, during this extremely heart wrenching time.
Respectfully Yours,
Jamie Ledes
