Alice Howard Obituary

Alice Moffatt Howard

Memphis, TN

Alice Howard passed into a new life the evening of October 19, 2018. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on February 3, 1956, and grew up on the family farm in Tipton County, Tennessee. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Tennessee Memphis and a Master of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt University. She worked many years with gastroenterology patients at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. She then earned a certificate as a Family Practice Nurse Practitioner at the University of Tennessee Memphis and worked at Covington Pike Medical Clinic until retirement to spend more time with her children. She loved nursing and helping patients, but foremost she loved her Lord. This love motivated her to be active in the Women's ministries at Second Presbyterian Church in Memphis. She was involved in the Walk Bible Study, Neighborhood Christian Center Circle, Women's Prison Ministry, and Sojourner Sunday school class. She enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels through MIFA and ringing the Salvation Army bell every Christmas season. Her life-long love of reading was applied and expressed through leading the Garden of Reading book club at Second Presbyterian Church, reading to children at Berclair Elementary School, and teaching English as a second language through the Refugee Empowerment Program. She loved to travel, play the piano, cook, and bake. She was especially known for chicken and dumplings, baked ham, and fruits of the forest pie. She was a deep thinker and had a cheerful and unique way of looking at the world and approaching life. Despite suffering from cancer for seven and a half years, she focused her mind on things that were true, good, and beautiful (Phil 4:8).

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, George Calvin and Zelma Faulkner Moffatt. She is survived by her loving husband, David Howard; son, Luke Howard, and daughter, Hope Howard; brother, Leslie Moffatt; niece, Elisabeth Moffatt Swanner (Bryant); sisters-in-law, Carol Howard Bell (Mike), Diane Howard Marshall (Randy), and nephews, Michael Marshall and Bryson Marshall.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 24 in the Chapel of Second Presbyterian Church. A private family burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests any donations be made to Second Presbyterian Church or Westminster Academy.
