Shirley Ladd Obituary

BARNSTEAD - Shirley Lee "Shirlz" Ladd, 22, of Barnstead, passed away suddenly Saturday, July 28, 2012 due to a fatal hiking accident in the Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine.

She was hiking the difficult Precipice Trail on Champlain Mountain. She was on a part of the face approximately ¾ of the way up to the summit when she slipped on a rock ledge approaching the rung ladder portion of the trail and fell approximately 120' to the trail below.

After valiant heroic efforts from the Acadia National Park Forest Service, Mount Island Search and Rescue, Bar Harbor Fire Department, Lifeflight plus a number of volunteers already on the trail who faced many physical obstacles and approximately 6 ½ hours of nonstop rescuing efforts. Shirley was later pronounced dead at the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor shortly after 5 p.m.

Shirley was born in Winchester, Mass. September 7, 1989 and was the daughter of Jeanne Ladd and Thomas Pare, Jr.

Shirlz was always an over achiever in everything she did, straight A's all through her schooling years. She graduated in the top 10 of her class from Prospect Mountain High School in 2008 and was a member of the student council in her 10th & 11th year and was President of the student council in her senior year. Shirley was also a member of the PMHS basketball team for her 10th & 11th year and was also a member of the National Honor Society for her 11th & 12th grade years.

Shirley then moved forward to excel in her career education at the University of Maine in Orono where she was a senior this year majoring in psychology and minoring in business administration. Where she also worked at the Student Recreation Center and managed a couple of buildings for Orchard Trails. She was so beloved by all her peers and extremely excited to be a part of such a close knit UMaine Community. She has always been very happy, full of joy, full of love for anyone and everyone around her, always bringing light into any dark situation and made everyone she was around to laugh.

Shirlz loved to laugh herself, and never ran out of things to talk about. She had many hobbies, a few of which included: crafts, music, dancing and making sure everyone around her was enjoying life, always thinking of the other person before herself.

Shirley leaves behind a number of people who loved her dearly. Her Aunt Deanna and Uncle Rayf Ruot of Branstead. Who was a part of her throughout her life and parented her from her freshman year of school until now. Her great grandmother Helen Cuozzo and grandmother Gloria Ladd of Tewksbury, Mass. Her grandfather Thomas J. Pare, Sr. and his beloved deceased wife Sharon of Effingham, her brother Thomas Pare, III, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and an innumerable amount of close friends throughout New England, including the love of her life, Dylan Tibbetts of Bar Harbor, Maine whom she met nearly a year ago and had their whole life planned out with him.

A Celebration of Life Service and Reception will be held at Word of Life Christian Fellowship at 95 Old Loudon Rd. Concord. The exact date and time is yet to be determined and will be posted publicly on Shirley's Facebook page.

No funeral home is responsible for services rendered; all details are made by close family, friends and church.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Rayf & Deanna Ruot 266 Garland Rd. Barnstead, NH 03218. All leftover donations after services and memorial will be appropriately donated to the heroes who risked their lives to save our beloved Shirley.

I'm so sorry your life was cut so short, but I take some solace in the fact that you didn't waste a day of it. You constantly tried to make everyone around you happier and you kept us all smiling. You were always a good friend. I remember giving you rides to OT after meetings or classes and such... definitely miss those times now. Keep on smiling, love ya Shirley!

Shirley, your life was taken far too soon and your death was absolutely shocking. The smile that you always wore on your face was so contagious for everyone else around you. It truly shows by all the attention you have received in this tough time how amazing you were. Your kindness and smile will always be missed. Rest in peace, Shirley.

I can remember the first time I met you like it was yesterday. Had I known that day how many adventures we would go on and how many nights you, me, Emily, and Jeff would have...
I wish I could see you one last time. It hurts my heart that you are gone, but I will live my life to the fullest for you. Rest in peace, girl. You always brought out the best in all of us.

I got to know Shirley for a far too brief time while she was involved with the UMaine Gay-Straight alliance when I was just coming out. While we didn't know each other well, she still touched me with her beautiful personality, and her smile.

I feel blessed for the time we did have together, short and cordial as it may have been. I miss you, Shirlz.

My deepest sympathies to her family.
