Dorothy Knapp

KNAPP, Dorothy Dorothy Winans Knapp passed away on April 27, 2010 at her home in Cherry Hill, NJ, where she had lived for 38 years. She was born in 1921 in Chicago, IL and raised in Ashland, KY, the first daughter of Leslie H. Winans, M.D., and Ruth Wickenden Winans. After graduating from Ashland High School in 1939, she attended Denison University (OH). Graduating in 1942 she was among the first group of women admitted to the University of Michigan Medical School. She received a Masters of Business Administration from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management (then the School of Commerce) at Northwestern University in 1946. In 1949 she was appointed Vital Statistics Registration Supervisor at the Virginia State Department of Health in Richmond, VA. In 1958, she met Frederick D. Knapp, Jr., a naval veteran and economist. The couple married in 1959 and moved to Charlottesville, VA where Mrs. Knapp joined the School of Business (now the Darden School) of the University of Virginia as a teaching assistant. She left the University in 1965 to become a homemaker. The family moved to Cherry Hill, NJ, in 1972 where she raised her children and enjoyed playing bridge with her many friends, gardening and reading. She is survived by her husband Fred, of Cherry Hill, NJ; her sister Charlotte, of Salem, OR; her brother Thomas, of Ashland, KY; her son Gary, of Springfield, NJ and her daughter Ruth, of Cherry Hill, NJ.
