Samuel Hudson Obituary

Samuel Theodore Hudson II of Abington died on February 24 after a long illness. He was 78 years old. Born in Philadelphia PA on March 4 1927 he was the son of Robert V. Hudson of Philadelphia and Julia Nichols Booth Hudson formerly of Har-ford PA.
He was the husband of the former Virginia Rose Busvine of Philadelphia to whom he was married for 56 years.
He graduated from the William Penn Charter School the Pennsylvania Maritime Academy completed his engineering studies at Drexel University finishing with an M.S in Civil Engineering and held professional engineering licenses in twenty states.
After finishing his apprenticeship training with the wharf and dockbuilders and piledrivers he entered the family business J. E. Brenneman Company Marine Contractors then run by his father and uncle. Starting in field as a dockbuilder in the construction gang he worked through the ranks to Field Superintendent and then Project Engineer at J. E. Brenneman. In 1967 Mr. Hudson formed an engineering firm S. T. Hudson Engineers Inc. and asumed the duties of President and Chairman and in 1968 became the President and Chief Executive Officer of J. E. Brenneman Company.
Mr. Hudson was involved with many marine construction projects in the Delaware River and Philadelphia part area. He was a major proponent of deepening of the Delaware River Channel for many years and lectured extensively on marine related topics.
Throughout his lifetime Mr. Hudson was active in corporate professional and civic organizations. He served on the boards of numerous organizations including the Penjerdel Council The Carpenters' Company of Philadelphia Ports of Philadelphia Maritime Society Drexel University Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary Coriell Institute for Medical Research Society of American Military Engineers Philadelphia Chapter and the Ocean City Tabernacle Association. He was awarded honorary doctorates from Albright College Combs College and Eastern College. His many awards and recognitions including Tri-State Technical and Professional Societies 'Engineer of the Year' Delaware Valley Council 'Citizen of the Year' A. J. Drexel Paul Award and Entrepreneur of the Year from Camden County Economic Development Committee. He was a member of the Union League of Philadelphia the St. Andrews Society a Director of the Ports of Philadelphia Maritime Exchange and served as Past President of the Wharf and Dock Builders Contractors Association.
Spending many summers in Harford Pennsylvania he remained close to family and friends there. He was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Jenkintown where he served as an elder.
Mr. Hudson was deeply committed to his Christian faith and through his lifetime served as a speaker teacher lecturer and spiritual leader for hundreds of churches study groups and special services. His life was one of active service and commitment to his family his community his industry and to his faith.
He loved to paint and particularly loved artwork with maritime theme and collected a number of local and regional works on this subject. He enjoyed many years with family and friends on the beach in Ocean City New Jersey.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two children Cynthia Hudson Christensen of Rydal and Robert S. Hudson of Jenkintown and their spouses Per W. Christensen and June L. K. Hudson and six grandchildren.
The family will greet friends and relatives on Monday February 27 2006 from 6 to 9 pm Baron Rowland Funeral Home 1059 Old York Road Abington. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at 10:00 am on Tuesday February 28 2006 Grace Presbyterian Church Old York and Vista Roads Jenkintown where friends will be received in the Palmer Room from 9:00 am until 9:45. Burial will be in Whitemarsh Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be sent to Grace Presbyterian Church 444 Old York Road Jenkintown PA 19046.
