Thomas Doherty Obituary

Thomas Joseph "TJ" Doherty
Thomas Joseph "TJ" Doherty, age 43 of Stratford passed away on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at Yale New Haven Hospital, St. Raphael's Campus after a short illness. He was the beloved husband to Berenice Vizcaino Doherty. Born on March 12, 1978 in Bridgeport, he was a son of Thomas P. Doherty and his wife Donna of Shelton and Patricia Ann Bertig-Dow and her husband Scott of Clinton. Father, "hero", to Alexandria and Collin Doherty, his two precious and cherished children, for whom his sun rose and set each day.
In addition to his parents and his loving wife and children, TJ is survived by his mother and father in law, Apolinar and Anparo Vizcaino, sister, Amy (Jim) Wiltsie of Stratford and his brother, Patrick (Mary Catherine) Doherty of Holliston, MA, step sister, Mary (Mark) Reedy of Brandon, MS and step brothers; David Carrano of Shelton and Joseph Carrano of Stratford. He is also survived by brother's in-law, Nate and Oto Vizcaino. TJ was predeceased by his step brother, Chris Dow, of Virginia Beach, VA.
TJ was largely known and admired as, "Uncle TJ" and leaves so many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly. Some of his other most favorite titles were "cousin", "godfather", "coach", "coworker" and "friend". He was larger than life with the brightest blue eyes, a magnetic personality and heart of pure gold. His departure from this world leaves a gaping hole in the lives and the hearts of a countless number of people.
TJ was a true Stratford kid who participated in all youth activities and went on to play baseball, basketball and football for Stratford High School, member of the Class of 1996. One of his greatest memories of his time spent at SHS was being coerced to take the stage for SHS drama, with his greatest friends by his side.
TJ was proudly employed by Eversource as an electrician where he made many great friendships. He stood for his co-workers as a union official, always there for someone in need. Coach TJ was extremely dedicated to others and loved coaching. He volunteered with the Stratford Baseball Association, Sterling House and Police Athletic League. Coach TJ had a certain style and flair to teach his players to be strong, respectful and play hard. He led with love and was always a true inspiration to all his players and families, and will be sadly missed by them all. TJ was superman, to everyone, always, without question.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 17, 2021 meeting directly at 3:30 pm at Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church, with Fr. Nicholas Pavia officiating. Interment will be held privately at a later date. A walk-through visitation will be held on Sunday, May 16, 2021 from 2:00 to 6:00 PM at the Dennis & D'Arcy-Abriola & Kelemen Funeral Home, 2611 Main Street, Stratford.
Please enter the rear of the building and follow the direction of the staff to pay respects to TJ and his family and kindly exit without lingering to allow other family and friends to visit. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to; Stratford Baseball Association, a league he invested so much in as coach and board member. Tj grew up with my boys. They were like brothers and he always greeted me with a big Teddy bear hug and called me mom. He and my boys and their wives raised their kids together, were involved in sports together, celebrated parties together. The bond they had was immeasurable! He lit up the room when he entered with his happiness and lust for life! This is why it just breaks my heart that he's gone too soon.
May his beautiful heart and soul rest in eternal peace and deepest heartfelt condolences to his family.
With much love,
Lucy and Mike Green and The Diaz Family

TJ- Although we live states apart and didn’t see each day to day, you welcomed me and my family with open arms when our parents married. Your loving personality to us, our girls (your nieces) and my dad was like we had always been there. I have so many memories of us laughing at our Thanksgiving in Alexandria Va, our wedding, and our family vacation in Outer Banks. You were there when my own brother left us. You were a true brother to me and for that I am so grateful. We will miss you so much but promise to love on Bernice, Alex and Collin, Amy, Pat, your mom and my Dad like you always showed us. I know you are in heaven safe with our savior. Kiss my brother for me. Love- Mary
