Ann Elizabeth Crossley passed away peacefully at her home in Harbor City, CA on September 6, 2016.
She was born in Bakersfield, CA, the daughter of Edward Nathan Chilton and Audrey May (Ackerman) Chilton.
In the 1940's, Ann's mother, Audrey, took her on a trip to downtown Los Angeles. They went to historic Clifton's restaurant, stayed in the Roslyn Hotel and went to Santa Monica beach. Her father took her camping in Sequoia National Park. Ann was an adventurous child.
In the 1950's, Ann had a Boxer named Mel and briefly lived in Las Vegas. She worked at the Las Vegas airport and raced her Volkswagen in desert races. Ann liked drag racing, loved to swing dance & jitterbug and continued to shake her tail feathers throughout her life.
Ann married Bill Crossley and their daughter's, Elizabeth Ann was born in 1957 and Kathryn Marie in 1960. Ann and Bill were partners in his drag racing career. Ann would manage the business finances, while also working from home and caring for Beth & Kate. In the 1960's, Ann enrolled the girls in tap dance classes and choreographed their routines to Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass. Ann threw her daughters exciting birthday parties with amazing decorated cakes. Ann, Beth & Kate made trips to Kernville to visit dear friends, Ruth & Les DeKay. Ann, Audrey, Beth, Kate & cousins loved Dewar's Ice Cream & enjoyed many hot fudge sundaes.
In 1969, Ann, Audrey, Beth & Kate went to see the play, South Pacific, starring Howard Keel and Jane Powell @ The Pantages Theater, in Hollywood, CA.
In 1970, the family moved to South Bay area of Los Angeles, CA and Ann began working as a purchasing agent for Matson Navigation. In the 1970's, Ann was the manager of Beth & Kate's softball team. In 1977, Ann and Bill divorced. Ann continued to thrive & succeed as a strong, independent woman. She proudly purchased her home, which she loved. In 1978, Ann and her mother flew to Syracuse, NY to visit her mother's sister, Robena Merritt and meet her cousins and also went to Ogdensburg, NY to visit her dad's relatives, the Chiltons.
In the 1980's, Ann joined Beth on many sailing cruises in the harbor. Ann joined a bowling league, a softball team and took classes at a junior college. In 1983, Beth and Kate threw Ann a surprise 50th birthday party and continued to have celebrations for her birthdays throughout the years. Ann, Audrey, Beth & Kate went to Washington DC, to Monticello in VA and to Tavern on the Green in New York City. They took a train to upstate NY to visit the Merritt's, Smith's and Chilton's. In 1985, Ann & Beth visited Kate in State College, PA for Christmas and drove to upstate NY to visit their cousins. In 1986, Ann & Beth vacationed in Hawaii. Ann & Beth saw Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr & Liza Minelli. In 1988, Ann, Beth & Kate went to San Francisco & Santa Cruz. Ann and Beth visited Kate in State College, PA and they drove to Philadelphia. They saw the Liberty Bell, George Washington's house and had a silly time on horse-drawn carriage ride. In 1989, Ann & Beth went to see Paul McCartney. Ann & Beth also went to Maui and rode bikes down the volcano.
In 1990, Ann & Audrey went to visit Kate in the Berkshires. They went to the Norman Rockwell Museum and had a fabulous dinner at the Red Lion Inn, in Stockbridge, MA. In 1991, Ann and her dear friend, Al Schurr, visited Kate in the Berkshires, after first visiting New Jersey. They went to Boston and saw the old Naval ships, drove to upstate NY to attend Valerie (Smith) Schond's wedding and went to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1992, Ann, Beth, Kate, Chris & Karen went to the amazing play, Tamara, in Hollywood. In 1993, Ann retired from Matson. Beth, Kate, Al and family & friends attended Ann's lovely retirement celebration. In 1994, Ann, Audrey, Beth & Kate took a great road trip to Monterey, CA and saw Cannery Row & the Aquarium. They also went to Carmel & Big Sur. In 1995, Ann, Kate & Arish went to Catalina. In 1997, Beth & Kate took Ann & family to The Pageant of the Masters, for her birthday, they dined at the Royal Hawaiian, stayed at the Inn at Laguna and went to the Sawdust Festival. They had a blast! In 1998, Ann travelled to Sydney, Australia to visit Kate. They went to the Blue Mountains, rode a tram through the jungle & had a fabulous spa day. They had an amazing dinner cruise on the sailing ship, The Bounty, with their dear friends, the Landi's. They had dinner at the Wharf Restaurant, went to see the Marriage of Figaro, at the Sydney Opera House and went to the Koala Sanctuary. Ann & Kate flew to Queensland and rented a jeep, had lunch in the rainforest, took a crocodile river cruise and took an exciting helicopter ride to the Great Barrier Reef and Ann went snorkeling for the first time.
In 2000, Ann and family went to Musso & Franks for dinner & saw Tony Bennett at the Hollywood Bowl for her birthday. In 2001, Ann and family went to see Lion King @ the Pantages Theater. Ann and her dear friend/sister-in-law, Sue Berry, drove to Montana to attend a wedding. Beth & Kate joined them in Montana and went on a driving adventure to Missoula, Phillipsburg, Anaconda, Butte & Bozeman, Montana. They mined for Sapphires and went to a historic movie theater. Ann & Sue also visited Sheridan, Wyoming, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse and Wall and Sturgis, South Dakota. In 2002, Ann & family went to The Sky Room @ The Breakers Hotel, in Long Beach, for dinner & dancing for her birthday. Ann & Sue went to Albuquerque, NM for the Hot Air Balloon Festival. In 2003, Ann & Al travelled to Hawaii and stayed at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. They visited Matson, toured the Lurline Passenger Ship, saw a Polynesian show and went on a Catamaran dinner cruise. In 2004, Ann had a goal of seeing all the covered bridges in Oregon, so, she and Kate went on a fabulous driving tour of covered bridges all over Oregon. In 2005, Ann, Al, Beth & Kate saw Neil Diamond. In 2007, Ann, Sue and Amy went on a hot air balloon ride in Lancaster, CA. In 2008, Ann, Kate, Sue, & Noelleen went to Pageant of the Masters. Beth & Ann saw Ringo Starr.
In 2010, Ann, Kate, Sue & Noelleen went to Pageant of the Masters. In 2011, Ann and Beth went to see Harry Belafonte and saw Cirque de Soleil. In December, Ann visited Kate in Portland, OR, for Christmas & New Years. Al visited and they rode the trolley, had a wonderful dinner at Jake's Famous Crawfish and saw A Christmas Carol. Ann & Kate dined with dear friend Anne & lounged at Kate's condo overlooking the Willamette River.
In 2013, Beth & Kate threw their mom an exciting 80th birthday party @ Terranea Resort, in Palos Verdes. Ann took Kate, Karen & Noelleen to Pageant of the Masters.
In 2014, Ann took Beth, Kate & Sue to dinner & the Eagles Concert, at the re-opened Forum and had the best time ever. Ann joined Gordon & Janet Garvey, at the Pageant of the Masters. Beth treated Ann & Kate to a beautiful sail on an old sailing ship, during the Tall Ships Festival, in San Pedro harbor.
In 2015, Ann, Kate & Noelleen went to Palm Springs and enjoyed the hot tub & pool. In November, Ann went to Florence, Oregon to celebrate Al's 88th Birthday and partied it up. In December, Kate took Ann to see A Tribute to Glenn Miller, featuring the Tex Beneke Orchestra in Palos Verdes, CA. Ann and Kate spent a very cozy Christmas with their dear friends, Emily, Bill, Haley & Marion. In March of 2016, Al visited Ann at her home.
Ann was adventurous and always wanted to try new things. She went snow skiing, whitewater river rafting, drove a GoCar, went bungee jumping and loved her PT Cruiser. She enjoyed her cars throughout the years- a 1959 Volkswagen, 1969 Porsche, 1964 Classic Mustang and a 1980 Audi. She had super zoomy taste and tons of style. Ann uniquely changed the spelling of her name to Ayn. She was extremely talented & creative. She was a creative writer, quick-witted and sharp as a tack. Ayn loved to read mystery books and met many of her favorite authors and got their autographs. Ann never stopped learning and growing and she was extremely accomplished in all that she did. She had a Mac Computer, iphone, ipad, enjoyed her Facebook friends & funny videos, liked playing computer games & solving crossword puzzles.
Throughout the years, Ann and Al went on many trips together - Hawaii, Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Grand Canyon, San Francisco & quite often to Al's property in Pismo Beach, CA. Al visited Ann in CA many times and travelled around CA. Ann also visited Al in Florence, OR many times and they travelled around Oregon, Washington and Canada. Ann gained many close friends in Florence, who adored her.
Ann, Beth and Kate spent many amazing birthdays, holiday celebrations & trips together. They saw many shows including Grandma Sylvia's Funeral, Cirque de Soleil, 42nd Street, Curtains, Stevie Nicks, Crosby, Stills & Nash and Shirley MacLaine. They enjoyed parties, sailing, snow skiing, road trips, drag races, spas, concerts, plays, movies, musicals, gardens & museums. They enjoyed being together so much and had many fun adventures.
Ann was strong, smart, sly, savvy, independent, beautiful, caring, fun, feisty & young at heart. She was a jokester, and always made sure everyone was having fun & laughing. Ann was the light in many people's lives.
Ann was a great role model for her daughters. Ann had a very strong work ethic, was very organized and had a great sense of humor. Beth & Kate gained all of those talents and many more from their mom. Ann deeply loved and cared for her daughters and made darn sure that they were always laughing & having fun. She wanted them to be happy & well cared for and she fully accomplished that. Ann and her daughters were extremely close and they loved each other so very, very dearly.
In 2015, Ann's daughter, Beth, sadly passed away, unexpectedly, and it broke her heart.
Ann was full of Light, Love and Happiness throughout her entire life. Ann is missed so very much and her kind, loving soul will never be forgotten. Ann's sweet, happy spirit will be in our Hearts Forever and Ever.
Ann is survived by her daughter, Kate Crossley and her dear friend, Al Schurr. Her cousins, Connie Schroeter and Don Merritt. Her second cousins, Tom Schroeter, Glena (Schroeter) Penner, Marilyn (Schroeter) Creagan, Deborah (Smith) Bryerton, Brenda (Smith) Thompson, Stephen Smith, Allison (Smith) Kraus, Valerie (Smith) Schond. Her nieces & nephews from both sides of her family, her step granddaughter, April and her many friends.
