Stephen Rowe Obituary

A a 30 year resident of Rancho Palos Verdes, passed away on Monday, April 14, 2008 in Los Angeles. Born in Everett, WA, Stephen was 55 when he died. Having graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1974, he served on active duty in the Air Force until 1978. On discharge, he pursued an engineering career at Garrett AirResearch (now Honeywell) for the next 29+ years until his death. An avid aviation and classic car enthusiast, he attended many air shows and classic car shows - and also being an amateur photographer, documented them. He also earned a Masters Degree in Engineering at UCLA in 1982 specializing in Control of Dynamic Systems. Throughout the years he was also a member of professional organizations SAE, AIAA, and SCS. He is survived by Domestic Partner, Larry Merkl of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; sister, Laureen Hortin of Half Moon Bay, CA; and brother, Douglas Rowe of Everett, WA. Preceded in death by, mother, Juneth Rowe and father, Lawrence Rowe. A gathering of family & friends will be held Monday 4:00 P.M. at Rice Mortuary. The memorial service will be held at Rice Mortuary Chapel on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 3:00 P.M. A reception will follow in Rice's Lighthouse Reception Room until 6:00 P.M. Inurnment will be private. Flowers are welcome, but in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of his favorite non-profits: KUSC (Classical music station), PBS station KCET, Planes of Fame Air Museum, Chino CA or City of Hope Cancer Center, Duarte, CA. Steve was my first boss when I graduated from UCLA to join Airesearch. He was an extraordinary engineer, showed my the ropes and was a real mentor. I just found out his passing and it made be really sad. RIP Steve
