Stephen Banas Obituary

Stephen James Banas, 62, of San Pedro, California, passed away unexpectedly on October 20, 2018, from complications following cardiac surgery.Steve, the only child of Stephen and Francis Banas, was born on March 19th, 1956, in Glendale, California. Steve attended Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, California and remained a proud Cavalier until the last days of his life.Subsequently, Steve attended the United States Air Force Academy where he played football for two years and completed his degree in Communication Arts at Loyola Marymount University. On April 16, 1983, Steve married Deidre Zbojniewicz of San Pedro California and began a rich journey filled with family, friends, church, work and community life.As most know, Steve was a passionate and talented videographer. On behalf of family, friends and clients, Steve recorded their happiest moments - weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and graduations. Steve found great joy in this work and the images he captured remain lasting treasures for all who received them. For this moment, however, let's turn the camera on Steve and focus on the man behind the lens. We would capture images of Steve racing cars, watching Oakland Raiders and Notre Dame football, cheering on his daughters' volleyball prowess, tinkering and fixing every imaginable electronic gadget, and enjoying every last bite on his plate.Without question, the longest unedited shots would be of Steve and Deidre raising their four exceptional daughters, including two with very special needs. These images would track Steve's long walks with Megan and Abby - a simple reflection of an extraordinary challenge handled with quiet grace and dignity. All of these images of Steve, and all he captured for others, represent only a minute fraction of a life. More profoundly, they remain a trigger for our memory. For now, our thoughts are with Steve and the memory will always endure.Steve is preceded in death by his father, Stephen, and his daughter, Megan. Steve is survived by his mother, Fran; wife, Deidre; daughters, Lindsay (Chris), Emily (Nick), and Abby; grandchildren, Emma and Aurora. Steve will be deeply missed by all of his loving brothers and sisters-in-law as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The rosary will be recited at 10:30am, followed by the funeral mass at 11am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Friday, October 26th.In lieu of flowers, donations to Holy Trinity Catholic School, Mary Star of the Sea High School or Willenberg Special Education Center in the name of Stephen James Banas, would be appreciated.Burial will be private. Please sign the guestbook at dailybreeze.com/obits.
