Wilma Dahlquist-Myers Obituary

Wilma Dahlquist-Myers, longtime resident of San Pedro and founder of Dahlquist Pre-School passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on June 6, 2008 at the age of 97. Born April 19, 1911 in Hanford, CA; the oldest of four children to Lloyd and Mabel Trewhitt. She married Lenard Dahlquist in 1932 and moved with her two children to San Pedro in 1941 when Lenard became the Executive Director of the Army-Navy YMCA. After the sudden death of her husband at age 36, Wilma began a pre-school in her house. She operated the school from 1944-1954, moving to its current location at 1420 W. 7th Street, San Pedro where it has served thousands of children over the 64 years it has been in operation. Wilma married Capt. Gilbert Myers in 1962 who passed away in 1985. Wilma loved her family and friends. She enjoyed travel, gardening, painting and nature, but her joy came from educating young children and seeing them grow and develop. Wilma is survived by her sister, Marybeth Dow; three children, Dolores Garren of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, Clifford Dahlquist of Fall River Mills, CA and David Dahlquist of Santa Rosa, CA. She leaves behind six grandchildren (Lisa, Dan, Mark, Jason, David and Erin) and by her second marriage, four children (Clark, Frazer, Lyman and Gil), and nine grandchildren (Bret, Annie, Alex, Diana, Clark, Chris, Mark, Matt, and Gayle) and many great-grandchildren along with her loving and supportive caregiver, Evelyn Copuz. Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church located at 731 S. Averill Avenue, San Pedro on Friday, June 13 at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to: The U.S. Fund for UNICEF, 125 Maiden Lane, New York, NY 10038 (www.unicef.org) or Providence Trinity Care Hospice, 17315 Studebaker Road, #101, Cerritos, CA 90703 (www.trinitycarehospice.org). My sincere condolences to all the family. I attended Dalhquist when it first opened on 7th Street in 1954 to 1955. I remember that Wilma was always very calm, but in control and always smiling. I have very fond memories of her and the others at the school. She was a leader.

Wilma was a wonderful aunt to my brother and sisters. She helped to take care of my mother, Marybeth Dow, when their own mother passed away at such a young age. They were close as sisters, and truly cared for one another. Aunt Wilma always had a sunshine personality, was very kind to each of us, and I will miss her rosy cheeks, the twinkle in her eyes, and that wonderful laugh. She will be remembered by the love she gave to us and to all the nursery school children she cared for these last 4 generations! She blessed us all!

My condolences to the Dahlquist and Myers families. Ms Dahlquist became the most important influence in my life. I attended Dahlquist Nursery School in the 1971. Now I am teaching Preschool for LAUSD. Ms Dahlquist will be greatly missed by me those who had her as a teacher.

My family was fortunate enough to be the Wilma and Capt. Myers' neighbors for many years. We remember them fondly for their friendliness and wise words of advice. They always had a ready smile and a moment to chat. What great people!

Please accept our deepest condolences. My family moved across the street from Mr. and Mrs. Dahlquist- Myers on Averill Ave. in the early 1960s and developed a lovely rapport with both of them, sharing visits and flowers and fruits from our gardens. I was privileged to enroll my three children in her preschool, where they received much nurturing and the best care possible. Wilma was a very special lady and she will be missed.

I am sorry to learn of Mrs Dahlquist's passing. I recall attending Dahlquist Nursery School and the kindness that Mrs Dahlquist extended to me and the other "students". Like many other "Pedro" kids, she was a part of my childhood that I will fondly remember.
