Margaret Sherlock Obituary

Margaret Lee Feliz Sherlock, born January 5, 1931 in Santa Barbara to Richard Anthony Feliz and Alda Lee Goodrich and died October 11, 2010 in Manhattan Beach. She graduated with a B.A. in art from UCSB. She was an award-winning artist in the South Bay for more than 30 years. She enjoyed 3 years as a stewardess for United Airlines based in Salt Lake City and L.A. and was a member of Clipped Wings. After being grounded by marriage, Margaret became a travel agent in Washington, D.C. and Manhattan Beach, which enabled her to travel the world. She loved to fly and also loved turbulence. One of her favorite flights was the six-stop flight from L.A. to Sacramento. The nickname for this flight rhymes with comet. Margaret was very proud of her ancestry. She was an active member of both Los Californianos and Los Descendientes and the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation. She was a direct descendant of Jose' Antonio Feliz, the original resident of the Spanish Land Grant Rancho Feliz, now called Griffith Park. Recently, Margaret spoke of hiring the Blackwater mercenaries to storm city hall, invoke the ghost that haunts the property, and take the whole thing back. Thankfully, we talked her out of it. A few years back, when King Juan Carlos of Spain came to visit Los Angeles, she was invited to luncheon and dedication of a statue honoring the descendants of the founding families of Alta, California. He too was unable to attend the wedding. She has cousins by the dozens: some of California's founding families she was related to the Carillos, the De La Guerras, the Cotas, the Ruizs, the Reids, the Cabrillos, the Bandinnis and many more. Another historical figure in her background was Artemis Maguire who was killed in the Battle of Blue Licks in Kentucky during the Revolutionary War. He did not attend the wedding. In 1955, Margaret married Warren Curtis Sherlock at the old mission in Santa Barbara in 105-degree weather. The wedding cake melted. Fortunately, it was not a portent of things to come. Many of Margaret's ancestors are buried in the mission and the mission garden. They also did not attend the wedding. Three beautiful children were born to them: Brian Richard, Scott Martin and Mary Lee (Howard), who gave them eight grandchildren: Matthew, Natalie, Eva, Benjamin and Gabriel born to Brian and Ferra. Jordan, Connor and McKenna Lee born to Mary Lee. Visitation will be held at White & Day Mortuary in Manhattan Beach on Thursday, October 21, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by a funeral Mass at American Martyrs Catholic Church at 2:00 p.m. A reception will be in the Blessed Kateri Room at American Martyrs from 3:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Santa Barbara at a later date. Brian, Scott and Mary...
I was so sad to hear about your Mom. I have this wonderful childhood memory of her leaning out the back door and calling you in for dinner as the street lights came on. How very lucky you were to have such a special woman to call Mom!
We too have a painting from her that graces the space over the mantle... Billy and my Dad surf fishing at the bottom of 6th street.
You are in our thoughts and prayers.

I worked for Warren at Loyola from 1967 to 1970. Margaret's beautiful artwork graced my wedding invitation she framed for me in 1971 that I loved and proudly displayed for over 30 years. My sincere sympathies to all of her family.
