At Queens College, on the morning of 7 November 1972, Prof. Heinegg bounded into Renaissance Comparative Literature and prophetically declared, "Well, today is the day we learn exactly how ******-up America is!" It was a shocking statement that I have used on many an Election Day with my own CUNY students. Thanks to this great teacher, I still have my paperback Boccaccio, Rabelais, Machiavelli, Pascal, Montaigne, and Descartes and the consolation of a philosophy and way of thinking that has sustained me in my teaching and in my life. Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei.

So Sorry, Rosie. Joanna and I never met Peter, however we have many fond memories of being with you at Gonzaga in Florence 1964-65, and at our reunion in Spokane a few years ago. Wishing you condolences and extending an open invitation to visit us in San Diego! Big hugs

Professor Heinegg was a legendary professor and the best of Union College. He was my thesis advisor and radiated an unforgettable intensity that I will never forget. May his memory be a blessing

I took Professor Heinegg’s freshman preceptorial class at Union. He was a dedicated teacher and I am grateful for the profound impact he made on my lifetime of learning. My condolences to the Heinegg family.

Professor Heinegg is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of my time at Union and I have often thought of him kindly. He was one of the most interesting people I have ever met--and by far the most brilliant. I am so glad that I was fortunate enough to know him and learn so much from him. I am sure this is an immense loss to his family, and I am so sorry for what you all must be going through right now.
