Dearest Kathy,
Rich and I were heartbroken to learn of John's passing.
He was not only a wonderful cousin and godfather to Doug, our youngest, he was a friend and a joy to be around.
Our sympathies to you and the boys and their families. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Love, Betty & Rich Jankuski

Many prayers to your family. As a art teacher, I was reflecting back on my favorite teachers of all time. I remembered John Slavik and was brought to tears when I saw that he is not with us anymore. He helped me as a student at North Central, was loved by many fellow students, always a wealth of encouragement, creativity and knowledge. John always spoke of his family, his loving wife, son, and even brought in his new camera to show us. He said he bought it to take pictures of his granddaughter, and showed off her cute photos. You should know that he was very well respected, and I pray for your loss. May you find comfort in knowing that as he touched my life with wit, encouragement, intelligence, and was an incredible example, as well as those of my friends, peers, and fellow students. Thank you for sharing him with us at North Central College. I'll never forget when he helped me build a pinhole camera out of PVC pipes, or took us dumpster diving during a class. Once he had us draw a picture of where we wanted to live, our dream place...when asked why we weren't living there yet, or making an effort to be there soon, he said why not? What's stopping you?...I'll never forget that.

I know we did not see him in the later part of his life but our Uncle John will always be a special part in our nieces and nephews hearts but more for his love for his late mother Zina Konie and his sisters who are still living, Dorothy Osborne and Bonita Carter. Love always your nephew Bob Carter.
