VERA L. CAMPOBASSO

1939 - 2016

MOUNT PROSPECT - Vera L. Campobasso was born on December 22, 1939 in Chicago to Nicola and Maria (nee Mariani) Tunzi. She passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 19, 2016 in Arlington Heights, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Vera grew up in the "old neighborhood" of the Grand and Ogden area in Chicago. She graduated from Saint Stanislaus Kostka High School in 1957. Vera married her high school sweet heart, Leonard Campobasso, on June 27, 1959 in Chicago. They were married for over 56 years. Vera welcomed three daughters and seven grandchildren into the world. They were her pride and joy. Vera was an active member of St. Thomas Becket Catholic Church, in Mount Prospect, for over 45 years. In her dedicated church service, she was heavily involved with several ministries that included: Women's Guild, Becket 500, Spiritual Life, Manna, Open Door, Giving Tree, Rice Bowl, Meals on Wheels, Parish Cookbook, 40th Anniversary Pictorial Directory, and was a church usher. Vera was the Women's Guild Vice President for 5 years, she co-chaired a dinner for Cardinal George, and also worked on St. Thomas Becket's 40th Ruby Jubilee, spring luncheons, Christmas parties, and St. Joseph's Day Tables. Vera was awarded the Women's Guild Woman of the Year Award in 2011. In 2013, Vera and Len received the Reverend Frank Wachowski Award for service and dedication to St. Thomas Becket Parish. Vera worked as a hair stylist for over 30 years and also owned her own hair salon. Vera was an avid and knowledgeable gardener. She was a wonderful cook and loved to bake. She enjoyed teaching her daughters and grandchildren the art of Italian cooking. Vera loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Because of her giving spirit, Vera was loved and adored by all. Vera is survived by her spouse Leonard, daughters, Cheryl (Mike) Mayerck, Michele (Paul) Zurlo, and Lisa (James) Chu; grandchildren, Nicole Mayerck, Michael Mayerck, Alysa Zurlo, Ashly Zurlo, Gianna Chu, Victoria Chu and Camille Chu; sister-in-law, Virginia Campobasso. Vera was a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Mary Suwanski, Vince Tunzi, and Frank Tunzi; brothers-in-law, Fred Campobasso and James Campobasso. Visitation Monday, March 28, 2016 from 3:00 pm until 9:00 pm Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road (four blocks south of Palatine Road), Arlington Heights, IL 60004. Visitation will be held 10:00 am - 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at St. Thomas Becket Catholic Church, 1321 Burning Bush Lane, Mount Prospect, IL 60056. The funeral mass will follow at 11:00 am. Entombment will be at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.
