My mother-in-law, Olga Eckman, relayed that Bob, has passed. I'm so sorry for your loss. I enjoyed talking with him, about his career, sports, and such, I learned quite a bit, given that though I'm athletic, I don't really follow sports. We'd talk in the hallway, or in the dining room. Our conversations are so vivid that I'm not realizing how it's been over 8 months since we had talked. Though I am a Christian, I had expressed that I would have liked to visit with him to his synagogue, we never go around to that. There was a restaurant the thought very highly of that we didn't get to either. I will pray for your family during this time of deep loss. If there's anything I can help with, please let me know. Sincerely, David Nee

Sorry to learn of Bob's passing. Enjoyed working with him for many years at The Apprentice School. He was very good at his craft and always cordial and helpful. Great with stories of athletics on the Virginia Peninsula.

Bob was a mensch. My first job was as a sportswriter for the Times-Herald when Bob was already a crafty veteran with the Daily Press. We covered the first year of the Virginia Squires together, and he took this 21-year-old kid under his wing as we traveled across the country. I’ll remember him for that and for so many other things. My condolences to his family and to Bob, rest In peace.

Dear Michele and David, We are deeply sorry to learn of your Dad's death. He and your Mother made our years in Newport News feel like home! May their memories be a blessing. We are so thankful that we got to see them during our trips back to Viriginia in more recent years. They both enriched our lives! Sending you love!

I read Bob's columns growing up, then got to work with him for four years (1983-87) at the Daily Press. Even had the privilege of covering the Peninsula Pilots (his main summer beat) when he as on vacation one year. He was a unique and talented individual with passion and wit. My condolences to his family and friends.
