Phyllis HUNTER Obituary

HAMPTON - Phyllis Martha Hunter, 75, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2011.
Born in Keyport, Kitsap County, Washington, she had been a Hampton resident for 42 years. Phyllis had worked for the Maida Company before joining Newport News Shipyard where she worked several years as a welding inspector. She and her husband, Howard, then began to work in the business she loved, buying and selling in flea markets. She was an avid art collector and loved reading and writing poetry as well as singing.
Phyllis is survived by her loving husband, William Howard Hunter; daughters, Margaret Otsuka and Jerry Swanner; sons, Mark Powell, Neal Powell, Ed Powell and Eric Powell; sister, Marilyn Powers; 10 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, James Powell.
She will be remembered for her life philosophy: You belong to God first; Yourself second; and Me, if you want to.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at Oakland Cemetery. Arrangements by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

I am so sorry for your loss. From what you have told me she was quite a character and lived life to the fullest. Keep the good memories close to you and cherish the time you had together.

Jerry,
I never had the privilege of knowing your mom but through you, I did get a glimpse of her. She made her journey, except for the last hours, through this live in a manner that was to her, most pleasing. We only have one opportunity to take this trip and she got the most out of it. God provides us family and friends to aide in the journey and they, as you have proven, can be a great blessing.
Your mom's love of the world around her is indicative of the love in her heart which was expressed, in her own way, to all who knew her.
Carry the memories in your heart to warn that cold moment, to give reason to laugh when no other reason is evident, and above all to remember the one who gave you life and gave your life purpose and meaning.
In Christ,
Stanley Nixon

Each of us originates from the "SPIRITUAL" stuff of the universe! When we talk "SPIRITUAL" we are talking about "GOD" ! HE is The Creator of all things! WE were never "Units Of The "Physical"! God simply took a unit of "The SPIRITUAL" and made for it a unit of the Physical to give it a temporary home, (wherein it could react for a while with His physical creation!).
Things "physical" have a short lifespan. When this is complete the original "Spirit" returns to The God Who sent it. All things "SPIRITUAL" LIVE FOREVER! WE, ALSO, WILL COMPLETE OUR SOJOURN IN THE PHYSICAL WORLD AND RETURN TO THE SPIRIT GOD FROM WHICH WE CAME! We will, quite likely, MEET AGAIN !
Love,
Rev. Ed Earnhardt

Mom had a good eye for art. She started as a little girl trying to image the scenario in the painting, as well as the mood of the artist as he or she created the piece. If her art discussion happened to fall on deaf ears, she never let that dampen her enthusiasm. Mom shared her love of art, her collection, and her knowledge with all of us. Thanks Mom!

Another of Mom’s babies. Please don't let Mickey's looks deceive you. She can bite ankles with the best of them.

Very sorry to hear of your loss. I know you have heard this already, but everyday will become easier. Memories are great, so just think of all the memories that you shared together. My thoughts go out to the family, this is never an easy thing to go through. Koontz Family Grandy, NC.

Choko was one of my mother’s furry children. Through the years she and Howard had many pets. Often spending more $$ on the animals than on themselves.

I am so grateful for my time with you.

Phyllis was a wonderful Mother-in-Law to me, and an even better friend. Always a wise woman, she was a good listener, and willing to impart wisdom and share advise when needed. She was always kind and generous to me, and looked out for Ashley and I when we were on our own. She shared her love of treasure hunting with me and managed to get me quite hooked. I owe a lot of filled shelves in my home to her starting a few collections for me, and helping me add to ones I had already started. She had an eye for a bargain, but remembered the value of things NOT material. I will miss her and always treasure the times we spent talking. I have a constant reminder of her when my daughter smiles, with that hint of mischief and love of life, that she inherited genetically from her grandmother.
Rest in peace Phyllis, and may your family also find peace and comfort in your memory.

Love and Peace,
