Lt. Johnson Obituary

POQUOSON - Lt. Cmdr Cory Paul Johnson, 43, passed away unexpectedly, Friday, February 28, 2014. Cory was a native of Grand Marais, Minnesota and a resident of Poquoson since 1993. After enlisting in the Navy at 18, he tested and was found highly qualified for the Navy's Nuclear Power School in Ballston Spa New York. The Navy awarded Cory scholarships and he earned his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State and his Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering from Duke University. He attended Officers Training School in Pensacola, FL., where he was commissioned a Naval Officer in 1998. He served on several nuclear power vessels, participated in several mid-east cruises, and was a "Plank Owner" on the USS George Washington. He was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, Frank and Doris Foster of Grand Marais, MN. He is survived by his loving wife Kelli Gutherie Johnson; sons, Corbin Johnson, Alex Johnson; and stepson, Jason Petry. Also left to cherish his memory, parents, Bonnie and George Johnson of Grand Marais, Minnesota; step-parents, Bobbe and Marty Clark of Duluth, Minnesota; sisters, Laurie Schiller, Randi Kimball and husband Kevin, Julie Hannahs, Sheryl Toland and husband Ron and Jeannie Johnson; brothers, Darrell Johnson, Ray Johnson, Charles Nylund and Michael Johnson and wife Debbie; his former spouse and mother of Corbin, Charmaine Joyner Johnson. In addition to his family, Cory was blessed with many friends too numerous to name. Cory had a great love of music which he shared with Corbin in his musical interests and many others. He formed and performed in a local band "The Bru Houndz". For many hours Cory, Corbin, and their musician "buds" jammed in his man cave/studio. Cory was a dear and generous friend to many in addition to being a well educated and professional naval officer. In his short life he touched many hearts with his easy smile and manner. He will be dearly missed and long remembered by many. The family will receive friends Sunday, March 9, 6-8:00 pm at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson. A celebration of Cory's life will be held on Monday, March 10, at 4:00 pm at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 831 Poquoson Ave., Poquoson, by Rev. Barry Throckmorton, with military honors. An additional service will be held on Saturday, March 22, in Grand Marais, Minnesota. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery at a later date in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to favorite charities of your choice. To the Family of Lt. CMDR Cory Johnson:
I am deeply saddened to hear of Cory's passing. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
I had the great privilege of knowing Cory for almost 40 years. We were both members of the Cook County High School Class of 88'
Cory was our Homecoming King, liked and respected by everyone in the school; the athletes, gear heads, serious students, party goers, goof balls, quiet kids, and all of the teachers, coaches, and bus drivers as well. That is because he was a good student in both academic and shop classes (I knew I was going to get an A on the chemistry "unknown" project when Cory agreed to be my partner), an athlete on the football and basketball team, good with computers and technology, a great mechanic who drove some cool cars including a sharp early 1970's convertible(I think it was an Oldsmobile), and perhaps most importantly a class act who was always nice to everyone.
I am so glad that we all got to see Cory at last summer's 25th reunion in Grand Marais. Our reunions will not be the same without him. Cory truly was the CCHS Class of 88'. What a wonderful guy!
You left us too soon.

Although we haven't seen Cory in many years, we will never forget the memories he has left in our lives. Cory was a great father, loving husband and incredible friend. He could always come up with something to make us laugh. Many a great evening was spent with Cory playing a little guitar, a few cold drinks, singing and laughing and just enjoying each others company. The world has truly lost a great person and loving friend. You will always be in our memories Cory. To Cory's loved ones, our prayers go out to you all and know that Cory was truly an amazing soul.......and I know he's strumming that guitar in heaven.

Heaven has gained a wonderful soul...Cory,always smiling, always making people feel good about themselves, always had a story to tell to make you laugh and always made you feel welcome. He will be missed by so many, and we as his friends and family will carry on his memory with tears in our eyes, but always with a smile on our face. I will remember his laugh and the sparkle in his eye when he talks about Kelli and Alex...he brought joy and laughter to us all and will be missed greatly.
