I am sorry I didn't see this until now. Dr. Fletcher was a pediatrician to me and my brother when we were children. I remember going to his office and I never heard him raise his voice to anyone... Years later I wished I had gotten him to meet my infant daughter when I ran into him at one of the local grocery stores in walking distance from my apartment. My husband was with my daughter at the time... I have a feeling he's helping the angels heal the children that need healing. Rest in peace sir...

My children were patients of Dr. Fletcher's in the 1980'-90's. I will always be grateful for his humor, care and willingness to listen to my thoughts on my children's health and care. "Well, Mom, what do YOU think it is?" What a blessing he was. I can only hope my granddaughter, now only a week old, has a pediatrician as humble and learned as Doc. - Nanci Burn (Manning)

There were dozens of times I was grateful for Dr. Fletcher's help and advice. And the best part of an appointment was when he would say "I always worry more about the mothers than the kids" lol Thanks for easing the sometimes stressful moments of a mom's life.

I have just learned of Dr Fletcher's passing. He truly was a one of a kind doctor. When my twins were born 29 years ago, I knew I had the best of the best!! He was with me at midnight and again that next morning. He always told me that if Momma wasn't happy, then nobody was happy! I hope your memories of Dr Fletcher sustain you during this very difficult time.

I've thought often, over the years, of Dr Fletcher. He was my pediatrician when I was a child growing up in Williamsburg. He was pediatrician to two of my three children. More than 30 years ago, I was already preparing for a move to the West Coast that would take place after my 2nd son was born. Since I wasn't going to be around for long I let the hospital schedule the newborn exam with a different Dr (can't even remember his name). When my son was born with birth defects that would require multiple surgeries I said, 'No' on the other doctor, I had to see Dr Fletcher. He was so good to me. I can't help but shed tears as I recall it. There wasn't much he could do for my son at that time but he encouraged me to proceed with the move and suggested how I could get started on his medical needs once we were in California. The same son ended up having a hernia repair a few weeks after his birth. I got to see Doc Fletcher one more time - at his insistence, he wanted to look him over before we traveled. He refused to take my money for that exam. He said it was his way of wishing us the best going forward. I've never known another Doctor quite like him (and I've known a great many). Like many of the others who have shared their memories, he was always available no matter the hour for my oldest son. I remember seeing him when I was a child for every kind of childhood illness. It's amazing to think of all the lives he touched.
God Bless this family that mourns the loss of their dear loved one. I can only imagine how deeply you must grieve his passing. You will be in my prayers.

How fortunate we are to have had such a knowledgeable and caring physician for our children. He gave me heartfelt fatherly advice as my newborn was taken to intensive care; he answered "John Fletcher" after the first ring when I called in the middle of the night; he apologized if we were kept waiting more than twenty minutes for our appointment. We always loved the wonderful Christmas display he made with the elves fashioned from smallpox vaccine containers. Over the holidays we would make a trip over just to see the display and when we dropped off some baked goods we received a handwritten note from him. He is also famous in our family for for suggesting to this very anxious mother of a newborn: "Ann, do you have any wine at your house? Pour a glass for yourself. Put the book down and enjoy your baby." Beth, Greg and Sarah, we are so sorry but want you to know how much he meant to our family and so many others. Ann Brown-Hailey and the Hailey Family.

So sad to hear of Dr. Fletcher's passing. He was my daughter's pediatrician for only about three years but I will always remember his calming voice and genuine care and concern. As a very nervous new mother many years ago I still remember our first office visit and he asked how I was doing and I started saying how my daughter was sleeping and eating etc and he stopped me and said "no, how are YOU doing?" I just burst into tears because I just knew I was doing everything wrong and he assured me I wasn't. And a doctor who gives out his home phone number? Unheard of nowadays. A true class act and an amazing, caring physician.
May your family be comforted by special memories during this time. Thoughts and prayers to the entire Fletcher family.

I have never known a more caring and compassionate man than DR. Fletcher. As a young mother over 40 years ago, he made me comfortable, and always had the most caring voice and concern when he was called in the middle of the night with high fevers. I will never forget him and his kindness to so many young mothers and families over the years. He and Mrs. Fletcher should be named saints.
I am so sorry I just read about this and missed the memorial service in his honor today.

I will always remember Dr. Fletcher for his loving caring ways. He would hug a young mother who had been up all night with a sick child and say - your child will be okay , now we have to take care of you. He would get down to the child's level, sit on the floor with them and ask what is hurting holding the child in his lap. Dr. Fletcher was such a loving, caring man to so many people. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Dr. Fletcher was pediatrician to all three of our children from 1964 until 1990 and all of them loved going to see him. He knew exactly how to put them, as well as me, at ease whether it was a regular "well" visit or an emergency. He was by far the best as well as the nicest doctor we ever had. I will never forget his infectious smile and great sense of humor. My sincere sympathy to all his family.

John was my children's pediatrician. I will never forget that on the day I left the hospital with my first child, John said "Don't ever hesitate to call me no matter what day or time. I assure you I will be back to sleep before you hang up the phone." Over the years, we did have to make those middle of night or holiday calls. He never made us feel as though we were bothering him. He was always caring and generous with his time.
Thanks Peggy and children, too. I know that he always had your support. All of his patients were blessed that you would share him. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. He will be missed.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the loss of this dear man. He was not only my doctor, he also doctored my two brothers and all four of my children. He will be greatly missed in Williamsburg, especially since he was such an iconic figure there. A funny story: When my son was about 4 months old and needed vaccinations, I took him to Doc. He knew I was in nursing school and therefore insisted that I be the one to give the needed shots to my baby so I would have plenty of practice. Somehow he talked me into it. My little one looked at me, after the dirty deed, like I was a complete traitor and then screamed his head off!

Dr. Fletcher saved my infant son's life 25 years ago. An unexplained rash and high fever almost took his life before his first birthday. Dr. Fletcher had been my pediatrician so I called him in tears only to get the usual calm voice saying "bring him in now". With his many years of experience he immediately realized my son had the Red Measles. Dr. Fletcher's gentle ways and reassuring smile were a blessing.
Thank you for allowing my son to be here today! My prayers go out to your family, friends, and all those who's lives have been enhanced by knowing you.

Dr. John saved my baby daughter's life...he found her problem shortly after she was born and got in the best surgeon he could find...she needed a second surgery when she was 10 days old. She did not progress as he hoped, so when he heard that a specialist from New York was speaking on her condition in another city in VA...he went to see him...not only did he shut down his practice to attend the speech, he convinced the specialist to take a ride with him to Williamsburg to check her out...How many doctors would do that today? He always, unless he was out in his beloved garden, took your calls in person, and could allay your worst mothers' jitters with a few calming or funny words...Thank you God for sharing this wonderful man with this community.

My deepest condolences to Dr. Fletcher's family. It saddened me that he died two days before Christmas a holiday that he dearly loved. John had been a pioneer in the health care of children in this area. When I started my pediatric practice here in 1981, he greeted me with open arms and friendship. We worked closely together at Williamsburg Community Hospital and later at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center as our area's pediatric population exploded. He was devoted to his patients and provided them with excellent care plus wise parental advice. He cared for so many children and their children in his career that it boggles the mind. I have the greatest admiration for Dr. Fletcher. He was blessed with a long life, an outstanding career, an endearing legacy, and a wonderful, loving family. He shall be deeply missed.

It was our great good fortune to find Dr. Fletcher when we moved to Williamsburg in the late 1980's. Not only was he a wonderful Doctor to our two children but he was, simply put, an amazing human being: highly competent, warm, outrageous, funny, irreverent. Our children loved him and he had a way of communicating with them that was magical. He could command a smile from a very sick, grumpy child with lines such as this: "How green is your snot? Is it really, really green--yucky green?" All the while, he consoled the parent that all would be well.
He served his patients and his community with grace and caring.
Our lives are diminished by his passing.

Dr. Fletcher was a very good Dr. He treated me as a child before African Americans were being seen by white doctors. When I gave birth to my children he was my pediatrician of choice. He always had a kind word to say to me when I would leave his office. He knew how to diagnose illnesses of all children when no other doctor knew what itwas. Often I wished he was still in practice when my grandchildren were born. He will be missed. A great legend is now a angel. Resting in the arms of our heavenly Father. Rest in Paradise Dr. Fletcher. You will always have a special place in my heart.

Dr. Fletcher was a candle of HOPE in a dark world. A loving, caring person who was truly called by God to serve the children. For years, on Thurs. mornings he came to the Children's Unit at ESH to serve our children there. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and I will always remember him telling my son (6 ft. tall, wt. nearing 300 lbs.) when he went for his college physical, "When my patients become bigger than me, I suggest they find another doctor". My son still laughs about that today. Christmas time was a special time for him, and the tree in his office was always interesting to view --- so many ornaments made by him. His family was special to him, and he enjoyed sharing about them. May they find comfort in knowing how much he meant to so many people. He will be greatly missed.
