George Kaye Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Col. George Alan Kaye (US Air Force - Retired) died on May 24, 2016 after a short, intense battle with cancer. Col. Kaye died as he lived - his way - in his home, in his bed, with the love and support of his family. George was born February 2, 1928 in Manhattan, NY to Dr. Alexander and Clara Kaye. He graduated from Choate in 1944 and Amherst in 1947 before joining the Air Force in 1951. He earned his Doctorate in Law from the University of Pennsylvania in 1953 and passed the New York Bar Exam in 1953. Subsequently he earned a Masters in Hospital Administration from the University of Pennsylvania in 1959. His military service included tours in Alabama, California, France, Texas, Hawaii, Vietnam, and Virginia as well as the Office of the Surgeon General in Washington, DC and the USAF Academy in Colorado, retiring from the US Air Force in 1980 culminating a 30 year career. He then went on to be the director of Health Sciences Facilities for The Ohio State University, retiring in 1990. Family was always important to George from the beginning of his marriage to Doris Mitchell in 1955. George and Doris have three sons - Jeff (Joy Cipriano) in Virginia, David (Jo Kaye) in Colorado, and Robert (Vicky Kaye) in Okinawa. George delighted in his grandchildren - Aaron Kaye, Joshua Kaye, and Nickolas Roy. He also leaves behind his loving extended family through marriage - the Cipriano's - Alex, Anne, Joy, Lisa, Eric, Stephen, and Marc. George and Doris moved to Newport News in 1990 where George continued his passion for serving and teaching others. He became a docent at the Mariners Museum, serving from 1992 to 2016, the Ft. Monroe Casement Museum, and as a volunteer with the NN Police Department from 2006 to 2016. He was a regular at the Riverside Wellness Center and frequent Ferguson Center attendee. George and Doris were avid travelers and toured the world on cruises as often as possible. George strongly supported WHRO/WHRV and the Southern Poverty Law Center. This caring, intelligent, humorous, and loving man will be missed greatly by his family, friends, and the community for which he cared so much. The family will welcome friends for a viewing and farewell on June 12, 2016 from Noon to 2 pm at Riverside-Altmeyer Funeral Home on 7415 River Road, Newport News. In lieu of flowers, George would appreciate any contributions in his name to WHRO, the Mariners Museum, the Newport News Police Foundation, or the Southern Poverty Law Center. George will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Mr. Kaye was a faithful volunteer with the Newport News Police Department for 10 years. He was devoted, had a great sense of humor, was very straight-forward (I loved this about him) and it was obvious he absolutely loved people. I would often stop by the front desk so he could tell me one of his great stories. He was such a beautiful soul who was always willing to lend a helping hand. His presence will surely be missed. May he rest in peace!
