Arthur Knowles Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Arthur Scott Knowles, passed June 11, 2016 after a brief illness. He was 81. Art was preceded in death by his parents Ralph Scott Knowles and Kathryn Lee Weaver Knowles, and the love of his life Dorothy. They were parted in death by a few short weeks. Art was born in New York and raised in North New Portland, Maine. He joined the Navy and served 20 years. Art was stationed in Virginia, Okinawa, California, Rhode Island, Puerto Rico, and proudly served two tours in Vietnam during the war. He retired in 1970 as a Chief Petty Officer with the Seabees. Art was an exceptional equipment operator and retired from both the Railroad and Virginia Power before retiring for good. Art was so very proud of having been sober for 39 years; he received his last chip from AA in January of this year. Art is survived by his children, Kathryn and husband Michael Green, and Timothy and his wife Denise Lehnertz Knowles; grandson Kelly Williams; granddaughters, Bridgit and spouse John Labowskie, and Morgan and fiancé Colton Roundy; great grandchildren, Daniel & Tucker; sister Medora Hall of Arizona; and brothers Danny & Joe, both in Maine. Dad was so much more than mere words can convey. After a cremation by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, Art will be interred with full military honors at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk on July 8 2016, 12 noon. Dorothy will be with him for eternity. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project by visiting: woundedwarriorproject.org or mail to P. O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.

"There once was a man from Nantucket." This was Art's opening line for my father's eulogy. Art was my father's best friend and as such, played an integral part in my upbringing. He was the guy with the coolest backyard I'd ever seen, told jokes that might have been ahead of my time (didn't go well for me when I repeated them in grade school), his woodworking abilities leave me in awe to this day, his love for that metal detector always made me view him as a treasure hunter or better yet, a modern day pirate, most of all though, I took away an understanding of true friendship through my observations of he and my father. They were always there for one another, shared the same passions, saw eye to eye on everything politically related, and took a trip to Maine together that absolutely highlighted my dad's later years. Having Art there for me at my wedding was beyond meaningful. The news of his loss hits hard as the realization sets in that the world will never be quite as good of a place again without him in it. I offer my sincerest condolences to his family but I have a good idea where he is right now and he's loving it. Thanks for everything Art and then some. See you at the toll house one day.-Philip Boykin

To The Knowles Family,

I am so sorry for your loss. You all are in my prayers during this most difficult time in each of your lives. Continue to trust in God and He will send the comforter to help ease the pain of the loss of your dear love one. I knew Art many years ago because I worked with him at Va. Power in the coal yard. Remember to always keep those precious memories of Art and your Mother also close to each of your hearts. God bless each of you.
