Arthur Scott Knowles

NEWPORT NEWS - Arthur Scott Knowles, passed June 11, 2016 after a brief illness. He was 81. Art was preceded in death by his parents Ralph Scott Knowles and Kathryn Lee Weaver Knowles, and the love of his life Dorothy. They were parted in death by a few short weeks. Art was born in New York and raised in North New Portland, Maine. He joined the Navy and served 20 years. Art was stationed in Virginia, Okinawa, California, Rhode Island, Puerto Rico, and proudly served two tours in Vietnam during the war. He retired in 1970 as a Chief Petty Officer with the Seabees. Art was an exceptional equipment operator and retired from both the Railroad and Virginia Power before retiring for good. Art was so very proud of having been sober for 39 years; he received his last chip from AA in January of this year. Art is survived by his children, Kathryn and husband Michael Green, and Timothy and his wife Denise Lehnertz Knowles; grandson Kelly Williams; granddaughters, Bridgit and spouse John Labowskie, and Morgan and fiancé Colton Roundy; great grandchildren, Daniel & Tucker; sister Medora Hall of Arizona; and brothers Danny & Joe, both in Maine. Dad was so much more than mere words can convey. After a cremation by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, Art will be interred with full military honors at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk on July 8 2016, 12 noon. Dorothy will be with him for eternity.
