Yolanda Gibbs Obituary
Yolanda was educated at Mattamuskeet High School in Hyde County, North Carolina where she graduated with honors. She went on to attend college at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. She transferred to Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia after her sophomore year where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Yolanda continued her quest for knowledge and education by attending the University of Maryland University College where she graduated with a Master of Business Administration Degree in September 2013.
She leaves behind to cherish her luminary memories her loving, supportive, and doting father William (That's My Daddy) Spencer and her heart, her daughter Lillian (Lili) Janine Gibbs-Spencer of Hampton, Virginia, three sisters, Veronica Gibbs of West Palm Beach, Florida, Sharon Gibbs of Washington, N.C., and Eleanor Gibbs of Grimesland, NC; one sister-in-law Lisa Gibbs of Lakeland, Florida and six brothers, Phonzie Gibbs of Windsor, N.C., Terrill Gibbs of Swanquarter, N.C., Darius Gibbs of Lakeland, Florida, Roosevelt Pickering of Bronx, N.Y., Antonio Gibbs of Harlem, N.Y., and Demetrius Gibbs of Bronx, N.Y., a god-sister, Shikara Hundley of Newport News, VA, and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 6-7 pm Thursday, March 25, 2021 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 pm Saturday, March 27 in the funeral home chapel. Due to Covid restrictions attendance is limited but the service may be watched live on the R. Hayden Smith Facebook page.
Although God has blessed the family so nothing was needed or left out if you still want to do something to show your love and support, the family invites you to contribute to the Yolanda A. Gibbs and Lillian Janine Gibbs-Spencer Scholarship Fund established at Hampton University to aid and assist students who find themselves in needy situations.

My sincere condolences to Mr. Spencer and Lillian, I am truly saddened to learn of Yolanda's passing. I met Yolanda in 1999 when we both worked at CHKD in Hampton. She was such a sweet, kind and caring person. Always willing to help anyone in any way she could. You will surely be missed on this side, sleep well my friend.

To the Gibbs family—-I’m deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Yolanda. I’m also alum and my son is currently a student finishing his last year at Hampton. Our journey with Yolanda began in 2017— working together consistently during the last four years—-her professionalism was bar none. Always available to answer questions and keeping us organized for the upcoming school year.

To the Gibbs family—-I’m deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Yolanda. I’m also alum and my son is currently a student finishing his last year at Hampton. Our journey with Yolanda began in 2017— working together consistently during the last four years—-her professionalism was bar none. I emailed her some time ago with questions regarding my sons account and hadn’t received a reply—it was certainly unlike her as she always replied within the day to any inquiries. As our family begins to gear up for another school year, I had asked about her—it was at that point that I was informed about her passing. We will certainly keep your family in our prayers. A great loss to the school indeed. She will definitely be missed!

I never met Ms. Gibbs however, she assisted me by phone. I called Hampton today and asked for her and was told she passed away. My condolence goes out to the Gibbs and Hampton University family. The last conversation we had was about her daughter and working for home due to COVID. Ms. Gibbs was very professional and enjoyed her job. May God watch over her daughter and family during these uncertain times.

My heartfelt condolences go out to you. Yolanda was an awesome person with such a loving heart and warm and beautiful spirit. She assisted me for three years as Student Accounts Manager with my niece and current with my son who is currently attending Hampton. As time progressed, we talked about life, our children, school and me teaching Special Education. When I called for help, I also left being blessed with her kind words and wisdom.
She will be truly missed. May God bless you all and keep you in his comfort and remember that she is smiling down on you.
