My deepest sympathy to the family of Dr. Kerns. Dr. Kerns was a wonderful professor and mentor. I have many warm memories of his challenging intellect, his kind words of support and his enjoyment of summers abroad in Italy. Next time I am Florence, I will toast him and remember him fondly.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the children and many friends Jerry made over the years. His children were always in the forefront. He taught them to be independent and think critically, so they each have pursued their own dream for their lives. Jerry has indeed left a great legacy for future generations. He was special to me and I will miss him, but I feel blessed to have known him and shared many happy times.

Gerry Kerns was a colleague of mind in the Political Science Department of U.D. from 1969 until my retirement in 1998. He was a kind, gentle, and helpful individual to me and to his other colleagues in the University. He will be remembered as a great teacher, an effective mentor to his students, and a strong proponent of civil liberties in the U.S. Constitution. I will remember him for his support of all that we did to strengthen the discipline of Political Science at U.D. My wife and I will cherish his friendship and goodwill.
God bless you, Gerry
