Stanley SHERRIFF Obituary

SHERRIFF, Stanley Dale 88, of Dayton, Ohio, passed away on the evening of October 4, 2017, at St. Leonard Center in Centerville. He was born on June 13, 1929, in York, Pennsylvania, to Stanley and Lois (Bushong) Sherriff. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law Norma and Jack Vanderzwart, sister Doris Hoke, daughter Marcy and bonus son Joey McLaughlin. He is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret (Peggy) and her children Mara (Mark) Chastain, Angela (Tommy) Ripple, Tess (Joe) Bass, and their children Grayson, Summerlyn and Addison Chastain, Jordan Ripple, and Carver Bass; by his children Ellen (Jeff) Ireland, John (Cheryl Napier), Jane Black and their mother, Jean (Share); his grandchildren Elizabeth (Jimmy Squibb) and Olivia Ireland, Justin (Jessica) Owens, Chelsea (Wyatt) Smith, and Charlie and Hazel Black; as well as great-grandchildren Jared, Jada and Jenny Owens and Kara Smith; his brother-in-law Richard Hoke; his Vanderzwart and Hoke nephews and their wives and children. A graduate of Old Fort High School and Otterbein College, where he played baseball and ran track, Stan went on to earn his Doctorate of Dental Science at The Ohio State University and served in the Public Health Service in Norfolk, Virginia and Staten Island, New York. He established a dental practice in Kettering, Ohio, and his son joined him. Stan was active in the American Dental Association at local, state and national levels. An avid tennis player, he was a longtime supporter of the Virginia Hollinger Memorial Tennis Club. Stan also enjoyed golf and actively followed his grandchildren's sports, music and dance activities, as well as college and professional sporting events. Stan and Peggy spent many happy winter months during the past two decades at Tops'l Beach & Racquet Resort in Destin, Florida. He travelled extensively after retirement, visiting many continents, but was most dedicated to being present for and supportive of his family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Children's Dyslexia Center, Valley of Dayton. Services pending Schlientz & Moore Funeral Home. On behalf of my father, Don Humphrys, sincere condolences to Stan's family. He spoke fondly of Stan and enjoyed the thousands of sets of tennis he played with him.
