Joseph Schmidt Obituary

News Death Notice

SCHMIDT, Joseph Jack "Smitty" age 85 of Dayton, OH, passed away Friday, October 28, 2011. Jack was born April 26, 1926 in Brandt, OH, son of the late Cecil and Viola (Grieder) Schmidt. Jack, as he was known, spent most of his life in North Dayton. He attended McGuffey Elementary and Kiser High Schools. As was the case with many young men then, life was interrupted by three years of Naval service in the Pacific Campaign in World War II aboard the destroyer USS Metcalf. In 1946, he returned home to marry Lois Jane Philipps on January 15, 1949. On September 27, 1949, their first child, Michael Jack was born, followed by Sally Ann on May 25, 1953. The family moved from their home in Moraine City to Pinecrest Dr. in the DeWeese / Ridgecrest area. Jack and Lois were very popular in the community, as a result of their family business, Philipps Aquatic Club and Jack's Drive-in, a popular North Dayton family landmark for 45 years. Through this business, they touched thousands and thousands of Dayton families who carry the memories of their summers at "Philipp's Pool" to this day. In addition to his wife, kids, and the family business, Jack was an avid golfer, master woodworker, loved thoroughbred racing, and was very skilled at pocket pool and was an avid card player. Joseph Jack Schmidt's legacy will be his easy going, friendly personality and his smile that touched so many over his 85 wonderful years. Jack is survived by his wife, Lois (Philipps); son, Mike (Donna) Schmidt of Jupiter, FL; daughter, Sally (Ron) Mahrt of Vandalia, OH; 2 grandchildren, Jessica (B.J.) Trach and Jonathan Schmidt; 1 great-granddaughter, Marlo Ada; 2 special granddogs, Pearl Jane and Jack Pot. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to The Friendship Village Health Center, Vitas Hospice, and Good Samaritan Hospital for their professional and loving care of Jack. Services will be private. In honor of Jack's daughter's love of animals, please send contributions to the Guardian Angel Fund @ SICSA, 2600 Wilmington Pike, Kettering, OH 45419, in Jack's memory. Dear Lois, Sally, and Mike

I just want to say how much Jack Schmidt and Philipps Aquatic Club meant to me growing up in Dayton. My sister (Debby Dryden) and I were on the swimming team for several years. We remember the great times we had at Coney Island or Lesourdsville Lake celebrating team wins many years in the 1960s. I also remember walking from my home near Forest Park Plaza all the way down Riverside Drive across the Helena Street Bridge to get to Philipps Pool. That way I saved the bus money and could buy a small root beer and a small ice cream to make my own ice cream float at Jack's concession stand. Those were "the good old days!" And your family helped put a smile on my face.

Lois, you and Jack made quite an impact on many people in the Dayton area. Jack, thanks for being you!

With deepest sympathy, Deedy Dryden Humphrey

So sorry to hear of his passing! I learned to swim at Phillips and will never forget the place. One memory I have of the pool is the constant playing of "The Battle of New Orleans" when it came out on the jukebox there! Also, playing Little League baseball with Mike. May he rest in peace and let God watch over him!

Dear Mrs. Schmidt. I remember Jack so well as I grew up in OND. I not only had a pass I worked for you both in the golf hut and clean up. My time as a young teen and being at Philipps were some of my most enjoyable memories. Working for Jack I received a check weekly. However, I think I would have done it for free. He taught me respect and the enjoyment of accomplishment. My sincere condolences.
