Charles Biehn Obituary

News Death Notice

BIEHN, Charles "Charlie" Seidel age 76, of Centerville, Ohio, died Monday morning, August 10, 2009 after a brief stay at Miami Valley Hospital. Charlie is survived by his loving children, daughter, Darlene Biehn Southern, and her husband Jim; son, Charles Seidel Biehn Jr., and his wife, Dana; and his youngest son, Joseph John Biehn. He was also grandfather to Jimmy, Joey, Nikki, Charlie, Stephanie, Amanda and her new husband, Augustine, and Angie and her husband, Bryan, as well as new great-grandson, Pierce. At his side was his dear companion of three years, Connie. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of twenty five years, Lillie Ruth Strider Biehn, and his devoted partner of twenty years, Linda Petitt. He held in great affection his "outlaw girls", Kim and Mary. Charlie was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CB Manufacturing & Sales Co., Inc. in West Carrollton, Ohio. Charlie founded CB Manufacturing back in 1965 in the garage of his home as a small printing supply company and under Charlies stewardship it grew to a full-service manufacturer of industrial knives and blades sold throughout the United States and around the world. The growth and success of CB Manufacturing was one of Charlies proudest accomplishments. Charlie was an entrepreneur, an innovator, and an inventor. Besides being a successful businessman, Charlie was a man of many and varied interests. He was an avid snow skier and skied all over the world including heli-skiing in British Columbia and was one of the co-founders of the Ohio Ski Patrol. He rock-climbed most of the peaks in the Tetons, he was a certified scuba-diver and dove in the Caribbean, Mexico, and southern United States, and hiked and camped in almost every US National Park. He visited each of the fifty United States at least once. He spelunked in Kentucky and kayaked the Gulley River. He was a marathoner. He was a golfer. Since his retirement from daily business, Charlie became a nearly full-time RVer, calling the road his home. During the winter months, he based himself out of Apache Junction, AZ and traveled all over the western states. In the past few years he took up with great fervor the hobby of geo-caching and accumulated a count of over 4,000 caches in four years and in the last two years he took up X-treme Jeep rock-crawling. He was a member of the FMCA Four-Wheelers of Moab, Utah and a recent member of the Miami Valley Muddy Buddies. A few days before his death, he was making plans for a sky-diving trip. But most of all, Mr. Biehn was an avid pilot, soloing in 1956 and continuing to pilot both single and twin engine airplanes for the past fifty years. In the period of one month, he flew his personal aircraft south of the Tropic of Cancer in the Cayman Islands and north of the Artic Circle in Point Barrow, Alaska. He was a member of the Dayton Pilots Club for many years. His pride and joy was his 1946 J3 Piper Cub. Charlie also served in the 82nd Airborne from 1953 through 1956 and he was very proud of his service to his country. Through all of his adventures, Charlie touched the lives of many, many people who loved him and cherished his friendship. A brief funeral service will take place at Presidential Banquet Center, 4548 Presidential Way, Kettering on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 3:00 PM, followed by Visitation and Celebration of Charlies Life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH 45401. Condolences and other tributes may be sent to the family at www.routsong.com

Dear Joe, Chuck and Darlene,

I wanted to extend my thoughts and prayers to you and your family. Losing a loved one is difficult.

Although I didn't get a chance to know your father, I know that he was a remarkable man. After reading about him and hearing amazing stories from Joe, he would have been a great person to know in business, family and friendship.

My hope is that you find peace and acceptance. I will continue to pray for each of his children, grandchildren and other extended family.

With many blessings and deep sympathy,
Kathryn Hitt

Offering my sympathys to the Biehn family.
I met Charlie 35+ years ago through a mutual friend who shared our passion for airplanes and flying.
Went to many airshows, Reading, Pa. and Oshkosh, WI.
Then the fishing trips to Canada, sometimes with two planes.
Then trips out west, Vegas, etc., with Linda as the den mother.
Shorter trips in my plane. Fla.,fishing, golf, great times.
When he would come back from from one of his RV trips he would come to Saturday morning breakfast at the Springfield Bob Evans. 6-8 around the table with Charlie at center stage.
I asked him if he could go to Oshkosh one more time. He declined because of all the walking. It wasn't the same without him.
I shall miss him.
Rest in peace my friend.

Dear Chuck, Joe, and Darlene,

Our lives are always affected by those we meet. I knew your dad, we flew together, played golf together, fished together in Canada, and made many memorable trips to Myrtle Beach. But best of all, just knowing Charlie gave me the greatest pleasure.

A salesman's salesman; Charlie never failed to make those of us around him feel important. The mere mention of Charlie's name, will continue bringing smiles.

With sincere sympathy,

Dear Biehn Family -

I was saddened to hear of your loss. Of all the people I have met in business over the years, Charlie made such an indelible impression on me.

My first meeting with Charlie was back in 1980 when I was in college. Back then I was a kid who didn’t know anything and here was Charlie, a self made businessman, larger than life. And over the years, as I got to know Charlie, my respect for him continued to grow.

During the last 10 years, we lost touch, but I was fortunate enough to have seen him again last August. I am sad to see an icon go, but glad to know he lived life to its fullest.

May the comfort of God help you during this difficult time.

Dear Darlene,Chuck and Joe,
We were so very sorry to hear of the loss of your Dad. He was always a bundle of energy and I always enjoyed being around him. He loved people, and one of my fondest memories is of he and I "flying the plane" to Chicago. He took the reins when we were coming in for a landing, it felt rough, but Charlie never batted an eye. After we got off the plane I commented on it, he then looked at me and said very seriously, "that was a very scary landing". I had no idea till we were safe that we were in trouble. Charlie was really a great guy and I appreciated him and admired his courage. May the Lord bless you and your family during this time.

Charlie was definitely one of life's most unforgettable characters. I first
met him in 1992, when he flew several people to my home in Ormond Beach, Floria (at that time), where they all stayed for 10 days to take in the NASCAR racing season. Charlie was a fun, humorous, intelligent man with a very forceful personality. We became friends and Charlie and I exchanged letters for about 10 years, then did e-mail. I knew of his illness, but he assured me he was going to live to a ripe, old age, regardless, and that he would remain active right up to the last day. Naturally, as was his practice, he did just as he said he would do. Charlie was quite a unique person. I send condolences to all his family and legions of friends. Charles, Charles Biehn was a unique human being and I will miss him greatly. He made you laugh, smile, cry and yell at him in the same minute. He was a very special person to me. I will miss you gretly!
