Francis Hoagland Obituary

Published by Springfield News Sun on Mar. 23, 2018.
HOAGLAND, Francis L. 88, of Ottawa, Kansas, died Saturday March 17, 2018 in Edmond, Oklahoma. Francis Leroy Hoagland was born September 10, 1929 in Tipp City, Ohio to Johnie Howard and Gladys Ruth (Frederick) Hoagland. While growing up in the Dayton, Ohio area, Francis enjoyed being a member of Woodcrafters of America. He graduated from Bath High School in 1949. Drafted into the army in March 1951, he received an honorable medical discharge that November. Francis married the love of his life, Julia Ann Roberts of Springfield, Ohio, daughter of Homer and Ethel (Snider) Roberts, on May 4, 1957. Together they had four children whom they deeply loved and nurtured. Francis enjoyed being involved in Boy Scouts with his two sons, Gary and Keith. He also enjoyed listening to his daughters, Denise Rene' and Nancy, play the violin. For 17 years, Francis worked as a cabinet maker and millworker at Highland Enterprise Lumber Company in Hillsboro, Ohio. During this time, Francis dedicated his life in service to God by answering the call God had given him to preach and lead others to know Christ. After graduating from Nazarene Bible College in Colorado with an associate degree in Ministry, he was ordained as an elder in the Church of the Nazarene on the Eastern Kentucky District on July 11, 1974. Rev. Hoagland and his family faithfully followed and served in ministry wherever God led them. Francis pastored in West Union, Ohio, Aberdeen, Ohio, Falmouth, Kentucky, Kermit, Texas, Broadview, New Mexico, Tucumcari, New Mexico, Ft. Sumner, New Mexico, and Mountainair, New Mexico. He and his wife Julia also ministered on missionary trips to Arizona, Mexico, and Peru. Rev. Hoagland frequently worked at Nazarene camps, and was active with community Ministerial Alliances. Rev. Hoagland worked for several years at Triangle Home Center in Clovis, New Mexico. After retiring to Kansas, Rev. Hoagland continued to fill-in occasionally at local churches. The Rev. Hoagland's interests were wide and varied over the course of his life, and included master woodworking, professionally racing a 135' class speedboat for two years, building a hot rod, backpacking up 14,000-foot mountains, building over twenty flintlock rifles, and hand sewing his own historical reenactment clothes. Francis was a scholar at heart and loved to learn and share his knowledge. Making a point to get to know those he met and taking an interest in them personally, Francis enjoyed conversation with lively stories and details. The Rev. Hoagland is survived by his son Gary (Rebecca) Hoagland of McLouth, Kansas, his son Keith (Marcela) Hoagland of Aurora, Colorado, his daughter Denise Rene' (Charles "Chuck") Stephenson of Guthrie, Oklahoma, his daughter Nancy (Harold Gaines) Hoagland of Wellington, Kansas; grandchildren Dakota Hoagland of Manchester, Connecticut, Cody, Shane, and Wyatt Hoagland of McLouth, Kansas, Jasmine Hoagland of Aurora, Colorado, Nathanial (Amber) Stephenson of Norman, Oklahoma, Morgan (Danielle) Stephenson of Surfside, Texas, Zia and Hayden Gaines of Wellington, Kansas; and great-grandchildren Maverick, Ezekiel "Zeke", and Ezra Stephenson of Norman, Oklahoma, Theron and Lula Stephenson of Surfside, Texas.
