Marcus Moses Obituary

Marcus Nathan Lewis Moses, 26, Kalamazoo, Mich. and formerly of Decatur, passed away Sunday, April 9, 2017, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born in Decatur Wednesday, Oct. 24, 1990, to David G. Moses and Michele K. (Noll) Moses.
Prior to moving to Michigan, Marcus attended Adams Central Community Schools. He graduated with honors from Mattawan High School in Mattawan, Mich., where he was involved in baseball and basketball.
He graduated Suma Cum Laude from Western Michigan University, with a degree in biomedical sciences, and in addition he graduated from the Lee Honors College. He served as a teacher assistant and research assistant at WMU and was a Fellow for Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
After graduating from WMU, he was an employee at Residential Opportunities Inc., assisting individuals with mental and physical challenges. Marcus volunteered at hospitals and contributed to raising awareness for the homeless. He was also employed at Borgess Medical Center assisting crisis and fall risk patients. Currently, Marcus had been a full-time medical student at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he was in the top of his class. He was a member of Sigma Sigma Phi Honor Society at MSU-COM and the Internal Medicine Club and Integrated Community Medicine.
Marcus had a strong Christian faith, with the support of Valley Family Church in Kalamazoo and had attended the First Presbyterian Church in Decatur prior to moving to Michigan. He was a compassionate and caring man who went above and beyond when serving others. He was humble and known as a quiet leader. He wanted to make a difference by raising awareness that colon cancer can happen in young people and may occur without symptoms. His MSU-COM classmates raised colon cancer awareness by selling t-shirts and were very supportive of Marcus. He was fluent in Spanish and enjoyed traveling to Puerto Rico to spend time with Vanessa and her family and friends. He loved and cherished Vanessa, with future plans of sharing a life.
Among survivors are his parents, David and Michele Moses of Kalamazoo; his companion of six years, Vanessa Pinto of Kalamazoo; and her parents, Juan Luis Rivera and Maribel Burgos of Villalba, Puerto Rico; brother, Matthew (Angela) Moses of Kalamazoo; sister, Michaela Moses of Indianapolis; maternal grandfather, Robert Noll of Decatur; and paternal grandparents, Larry and Sid Moses of Fort Wayne. He was a loving uncle to nephew, Elyzian Moses, and nieces, Maya Moses, Ruby Moses and Lenly Bonita Grace.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Bonnie Noll.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, with Pastor Matt Munson officiating. Interment will follow at the Decatur Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to Colon Cancer Alliance.

It is during times of great loss that we realize how limiting words can be and how special our friends truly are. We hope you hear the words we cannot speak, for words can do no justice to the heartache you and your family have suffered.
