Leonard Beck Obituary
Wilmington - Leonard Henry Beck, age 88, of Wilmington, DE passed away on February 15, 2021. Len was born in Dayton, OH, the son of late Leonard W. and Mildred (Nartker) Beck. Len was a graduate of Chaminade High School, the University of Dayton (OH) with a BS in Chemistry and Ohio State University where he graduated with a Master's degree and PhD. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps, nuclear weapons, at the end of the Korean War.
He worked for the DuPont Company for 29 years where he held several patents - of note processes for Stainmaster purification and continuous pump reactor. He was a member of St. John the Beloved Church and served as the President of Council, and of exploratory committees for the new church and school library. Len was an active advocate for Prison Reform and upon retirement took Criminal Justice courses at Delaware Tech and University of Delaware
Len is survived by his wife, Florence Ann Beck, married for 65 years; their 10 children - sons: Leonard J. (Irena); Stephen M.; Dr. Edward J. of Cupertino, CA; Thomas G.; William M. (Tracey); daughters: Theresa Jelenek (Joe); Margaret Hohman (Dave); Catherine Lynch (Dr. Ray) of Canton GA; Elizabeth Cusack (Chris); and Barbara Kelley (Nori) of Nottingham PA; 27 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; brothers Dr. John (Mary), James (Donna), Dr. Michael (Lin), sisters Bertha Hilbing and Mary Graham; sister-in-law Mary C. Beck, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by son, Robert Beck; grandson, L. Joseph Beck; brother Lawrence Beck; and brother-in-law, Dr. Jack Hilbing.
Friends are invited to call at the Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Road Wilmington DE 19808 from 6-8 PM on Friday, February 19, 2021. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at 10 AM at St. John the Beloved Church. For those unable to attend the Mass, a live webcast will be available via Len's obituary page on mealeyfuneralhomes.com. A full obituary is also available at mealeyfuneralhomes.com. Burial will be held privately in All Saints Cemetery.

I want to offer my condolences to Mrs. Beck and her family. I remember my family joining with the Beck's at the annual DuPont chicken barbecues in New Jersey. We would sometimes visit with them following Mass at St. John the Beloved when we lived in Sherwood Park. Mr. Beck always had a smile for us. We will pray for his soul and for peace and comfort for the family during these difficult days. May God bless you! Ed Slentz.

Len was the best chemist I had to assist on processes. Working to get Stainmaster to the mills showed his skills dramatically.
He could be humble, dynamically emphatic and a true Christian.
