Howard Sands Obituary

Howard Sands

Wilmington - Age 78, died on March 18, 2021, after his quality of life was diminished in recent years by what is believed to be dementia with Lewy bodies. His brain will be studied at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and tissues will be preserved for possible opportunities to advance medical knowledge. The son of the late Abraham and Frances (nee Willensky) Sands, Howard was born on August 20, 1942, in New York City. He earned a bachelor's degree from Rutgers University in 1964 and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Case Western Reserve University in 1969.

Howard was engaged in pre-clinical medical research in academia and industry for more than 35 years. His interests included photography, collecting and listening to old-time radio programs, planning trips and traveling, and sharing his interest in World War II history with others as a docent on the Battleship New Jersey (BB62). Although we didn't always agree with Howard's points of view, we have missed the person he was and his musings on religion (and his complicated relationship with it), politics, and other topics, as he lost the ability to think and express himself.

Howard was a loving husband to his wife of 52 years, Michele (nee Berkowitz) Sands; devoted father to his children, Aundria Tenorio and her fiance Tony Brown, Michael Sands and his partner Nissa Wibecan, and Deborah Costas and her husband Evan; and a doting "Papa" to his grandchildren, Elisa and Eva Costas. Also surviving are his caring sister, Sherie Koopersmith and her husband Michael; brother-in-law Murray Berkowitz and his wife Mary; sister-in-law Phyllis Bravo and her husband Kenneth; and many other family members and long-time friends.

A private burial service will be held Sunday, March 21. It may be viewed on Zoom at 2:30 p.m. by contacting Schoenberg Memorial Chapel at 302-762-0334. Shiva information also is available at this number.

Our appreciation to the Seasons Hospice nurses and staff and the many caregivers, incuding Gloria Michaelle, Lavena, Val, Gina, Maureen, Tahir, and Renee, who provided Howard with excellent care the past few years.

Donations in memory of Howard are welcome, with BB62 (www.battleshipnewjersey.org) or the Lewy Body Dementia Association (www.lbda.org) as suggested recipients.

It was a pleasure to work with Howard..he had taught me a lot about science and had the opportunity to know him as a person. Helped him get to work while his car was operated on. It is with great sadness to find out he has passed. Greatly missed. He was a great man.
