I was an Elementary Education major with a minor in Speech and Drama at West Virginia in 1961-65. I was required to take an Art Appreciation course with joe and it changed my life in many ways. I found that I enjoyed all aspects of art history as taught by him and after I graduated and ever since I have traveled the world with art history as my guide. I taught from 1965 to 1998 and I encorporated art in every classroom. I was in the regular classroom for seven years, began a program of 3,4, and five year olds in a H.S. Parental Training and Early Childhood Class, and the rest of the years were in a Pull Out Gifted Program in Pennsylvania and Saudi Arabia. His influence in one course was my starting point. I also saved up $95.00 to buy my first art original from him for my parents the first Christmas home that year! I did not let him know this before he died and I regret that.

I knew Joe for many years as a student and then later as a friend working for him at his house. I recently stopped by to visit and found out he had passed away. As a sculptor Joe taught me to weld and taught me many interesting ways to make art. As a young man I did not fully understamd the sheer depth of his art and only now am I starting to finally see the light so to speak. I find a fascinating relationship with sound metal time and space. I recently had some dreams about such things and I like to think it was Joe's spirit talking to me from the beyond. .

Joe was a painter, sculptor, teacher and friend to those of us that made the Art Department at Delaware our home, however briefly. Joe exhibited nationally, but always had time for students. Joe led by example, and build a sculpture program that encouraged innovation, craftsmanship, and determination, qualities he brought to his own work.

He was first a mentor, and then a friend for 40 years. I will miss him deeply and extend my sympathy to Daphne, Marc, Eric, Keith and the rest of the family.

Daphne,
Joe's auditory sculpture, with his enthusiastic description of the effect of angles and of scale, left fond memories with me. I think of him when I see his sculpture at the Delaware Art Museum. My condolences to you and to your extended family.
