Lowell Mercer Obituary

Lowell S. Mercer

Lowell S. Mercer passed away at home on June 28, 2011 at the age of 83. His living wife, Marilyn, was at his side in that moment as she had been for their 51 wonderful years of marriage.

Born to J. Walter Mercer and Mary Swayne Mercer in 1928, Lowell grew up in Mendenhall, PA where he graduated from Kennett High School. He graduated with an engineering degree from Drexel University and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

He was employed as an electrical engineer at Delmarva Power for 37 years. In addition to his career, he loved working on lighting for shows for the Wilmington Drama League and the Brandywiners at Longwood Gardens.

Lowell was also a gifted musician and shared that gift with others by directing the choir at Mt. Lebanon UMC for the 37 years he and Marilyn were members. He then directed at Calvary Presbyterian for another eight years during his 20 year membership of that church community. Additionally, his love of music led him to create two singing groups - the Spirit Singers and the New Life Singers - who sang at events all over Delaware.

Lowell loved spending time with his family, tending to his garden and a good U of D tailgate with friends. He was soft-spoken, kind, and well-loved by all that knew him.

Lowell was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Vernon Swayne Mercer. He is survived by his devoted wife, Marilyn McKay Mercer; loving daughters Cindy Mercer of Wilmington and Annette McCauley (Frank) of Canton, CT; granddaughters Lia Mercer and Kendall and Cameron McCauley; and 5 nieces and nephews and their families.

The Mercer family wishes to thank Delaware Hospice for their care over the last few months.

A celebration of Lowell's life will be held at Calvary Presbyterian Church, Maryland Ave. and Boxwood Road, Friday July 8, at 11 am. Burial will be private.

In honor of Lowell and in lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Calvary Presbyterian Church, 701 S. Maryland Ave., Wilm., DE 19804 or Faithful Friends, 3 Germay Drive, Wilmington, DE 19804.

Dear Marilyn and family,
I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of Lowell. I only met him a few times; at my fathers funeral and other family funerals. I remember him as a very kind, soft spoken man who was a pleasure to meet. Please accept my sincere sympathy in the loss of your beloved husband, father and grandfather.

I am so sorry that I am unable to show my respects on Friday as my husband, Linda and I are on vacation until the 18th of July.

Marilyn, please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Sincerely, Nancy McKay Hitch

Marilyn and Family, I will always hold dear the time you came to the house for a party. I think it was the first time I had met Lowell. Even more memorable were the chance meetings in the super market. Lowell was always so quiet, so genuine, so wonderful and so generous with his lovely greeting smile. He will be sadly missed but leaves us with treasured memories. Love, Carolyn Kleinpeter
