Sophie Krzyzanowski Obituary

Sophie C.

Krzyzanowski

AGE: 81 • Wilmington

Sophie C. Krzyzanowski (Majkowska) passed away on December 15, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital surrounded by her family, including her only surviving sister, Martha Keeley. Sophie was born in Wilmington, Delaware on December 5, 1932, one of nine children, to the late Sophie and Stanley Majkowski.

She was raised in the Polish community of Browntown where she and her husband also raised their family and where she continued to live until her death. Her love for Browntown was demonstrated by her active community service to the area. Sophie served as the Democratic Committee Chairwoman for the 6th District. One of the accomplishments she was very proud of was being nominated and receiving an award presented by Senator Thomas Carper for her lifetime service to the Democratic Party. Her neighbors often looked to her for advice and she was lovingly dubbed by many, the "Mayor" of Browntown.

She was a member of St. Hedwig Parish and the Holy Rosary Society. She retired after serving 32 years as head housekeeper for the Central YMCA. She enjoyed making flower arrangements and while she was often told her creations would be in high demand at craft shows; Sophie more enjoyed giving them away to decorate the homes of family and friends. Sophie was also known for her avid bargain shopping, as well as enjoying time with her husband playing slots at Delaware Park. Sophie's character was that of a strong woman, but with a generous heart of gold. She was a woman of many talents, but preferred staying in the background to let others shine.

Sophie took the most pride in her loving husband and family. Her strong belief in family was instilled in her children and she made sure they were well rooted in their Polish heritage and traditions. Her will and love was unshakable when it came to family.

Sophie is predeceased by her sons, Mark A. (1984) and Edmund J. (2009). She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Edmund S.; her son, Stephen; daughter, Martha A. Roy with husband William J.; son, Matthew with wife, Andrea; 11 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; her sister, Martha Keeley and sister-in-laws, Eileen Majkowski, Dorcas Majkowski and Bertha Pajewski. While Sophie's physical presence will be missed by them, the love she gave will be carried and lived through them. Left also to cherish Cioci (aunt) Sophie's memory is her many nieces and nephews whom she deeply cared for and loved.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am in St. Hedwig Church, Linden & S. Harrison Sts., Wilmington, DE on Saturday, December 21, 2013. Visitation for Sophie will be in church starting at 9:30 am. Burial will follow in the Cathedral Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to be sent to either; the American Diabetes Assoc. or to St. Hedwig Church in Sophie's memory.

Mom,
I miss you soo much. There are so many times I go to pick up the phone to ask you something or just to run something by you and then remember. I´m doing my best in keeping our traditions going, but miss you, dad, Edmund and mark being around our holiday table. Thank you for keeping watch over all of us. Kendall especially feels your presence. You are always residing in my heart and in my thoughts is where we have our conversations. I love you, Mom.
