James Nilon Obituary

The Honorable James F. Nilon, Jr., age 68, of Middletown Township, Pennsylvania, died at home surrounded by his family Thursday, January 18, 2018 after a brief battle with cancer. Judge Nilon was born in Delaware County, Pennsylvania February 26, 1949. He was the son of James F. and Doreen Randell Nilon who predeceased him. He was a graduate of Archmere Academy, PMC College and the Delaware Law School of Widner University, where he served as a member of the Law Review and Moot Court Honor Society. He was admitted to the bar in 1978 and was a partner in the Robbins, Tozer & Nilon Law Firm. Judge Nilon was elected to a ten year term on the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas in 2005 where his reputation for judicial expediency and fairness served him well. In 2015 he was retained for a second ten year term and was Head of the Criminal Division at the time of his retirement in December 2017. Prior to his election to the bench he served as Magisterial District Judge, Middletown Township, from 1989 until 2005. He was President of the District Judge Association in 2003 and served on the Strategic Planning Team for the Unified Case Management System for Delaware County Courts and the Delaware County Criminal Justice Advisory Committee. He also was a former Chairman of the Middletown Township Parks and Recreation Committee and served on the Middletown Township Planning Commission and Open Space Committee. Above all else Jim loved spending time with his wife Leslie at his homes in Middletown Township and Sea Isle City, New Jersey. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. He is survived by his wife of forty-two years, Leslie Vough Nilon, and his sisters, Sharon Rovelli, (Jose A.), Deborah Buckson, (Brian R.), Holly Wilson, and his sister-in-law Margaret (Patty Proch) as well as, numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral Mass: Thursday, January 25th at 12 Noon at The Church of St. Frances De Sales, 35 New Road, Lenni, Aston PA 19014, where friends may call after 10:00AM. Interment: Ss. Peter & Paul Cemetery. Leslie and Family

Still reeling from the news... What a huge loss!

Jim was the consummate raconteur and I have many fond memories of him getting into a story - and we were freezing in the 3:30 pm parking lot or in the Computer room long after everybody else had left - and being totally engrossed with his tale.

And what an eager learner he was... just wanted to devour anything new and tech!

Jim has QSY'd (Morse Code for moved) to a nicer, kinder place - hope to catch up with him some day.

My heartfelt condolences to Leslie, the Nilon Family, staff and associates. I know how much he was loved by all. I just found out the sad news today and it really hit me.
I had the pleasure of becoming friends with the Judge as GM of the Corinthian Yacht Club, until last year, where he would have a couple of events a year with holiday office parties and DelVal retirement events. It always amazed me that he would always take my calls no matter the time of day. He enjoyed the club so much that he suggested us for his nephew's wedding.
Although he was a Judge, he was just a regular guy, as evidenced by all the photos that have been posted. Always fun and respectful, I always loved when he would tell his stories. I remember one day when he showed up in his NJ Battleship uniform and told me how he would climb to the top of the ship to repair electronics. I could tell by our conversations, that as a Judge, he was very fair and compassionate.
You had a lot more of life to live, that was cut too short. You will be missed my friend.

Jimmy was a very special person to the Darlington family. He was friend to mom (Nancy) and dad (Jerry) and myself and someone my children viewed as part of the family. He left a lasting influence on my son and his desire for the profession of law. He will be missed.

As Jimmy's youngest sister, I have a story to share. I believe Jimmy was destined to be a judge. When I was in my teens, a friend and I had gone out to a dance in Chester. We were not supposed to be there but we thought we could get away with it if I stayed at her home. The next day my brother looked me in the eye and said l, Why were you in Chester last night?. I asked him,How did you know?. His reply was, You have guilt written all over your face!
Rest in Peace brother

Jimmy and I went to college together at PMC. We sometimes left the campus and went for a flight in my family's plane. We were the best of friends. I worked with Jim and his sisters at the Rollings Stones concert at JFK stadium. What Fun. I don't know where all the years have gone. It just seems like yesterday we were flying together at the seaplane base or in my Dad's plane. Great memories. I will miss you James Nilon, Jr. To Debby, Sherry, Holly, and Leslie, I remember all of us being together at your home in Neither Providence with your Mom and Dad. I miss those days. I love all of you and am so very sorry that Jimmy has passed.

Jim high on the ship yardarms

Dave & Margaret Burgess

January 22, 2018

We've known Jim for about 4 years as a volunteer aboard the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial and a member of the Battleship Radio Club. He was always eager to work on any project we had going at the time. He was so enthusiastic that he got everyone he worked with more involved to keep up with him. His smile was contagious and brightened everyone's day.

One of his favorite jobs was when he got to climb high on the ship to work on antennas or pulling up the signal flags or friendship lights. When he wasn't working on a project with the gang, he could be found operating one of the ham radios in our ham shack. He really enjoyed telling his contacts that he was operating from the Battleship New Jersey.

Our condolences to Leslie and the rest of Jim's family. We miss you Jim but know you are at peace now and watching over us to make sure we do things the right way!

To the Nilon family. Judge Nilon was one of the first Judges I ever appeared in front of as a young attorney when he was a local magistrate. I also had many cases before him in Common Pleas Court. He was always kind and professional. My deepest condolences on his passing. His sense of humor and intellect will be sorely missed by the BAR. May his memories comfort you. My family has been decimated by cancer so my heart goes out to you.

Respectfully,Andrew J. Edelberg Esq.
