James Mitchell Obituary

James H. Mitchell

Salisbury-James H. Mitchell, or Jim, 80, died at Peninsula Regional Medical Center on Monday, March 7, 2016; after experiencing a hemorrhagic stroke at home. He was the beloved son of the late John P. and Grace Lorine Mitchell, formerly of Denver, CO.

He was married to Cora M. Mitchell, with two sons, Jeffrey Mitchell of San Diego, CA, and Lowell Mitchell of Washington, DC, and a granddaughter, Lauren Mitchell of Longmont, CO, and close family friend "adopted granddaughter", Aisha Mohammed of Salisbury, MD.

Born in Denver, CO, Jim enjoyed a 45 year career in New York City; including 26 years as a guitarist on the Sesame Street Band, accompanist to may vocal artists such as Steve and Eydie Gorme, Barbara Streisand, and Barbara Cook, and also on the Carol Burnett Show. Since moving to Salisbury, MD in 1990 he performed with a trio known as the Jazz Guys including Bruce Chappelle and Ev Cook, playing the Great American songbook.

Jim counted his formative years with territory bands "out West" as his college experience, and gradually he and Cora grew to call New York City their adopted hometown.

A gathering of close friends to celebrate Jim's life and music is planned for Saturday, March 12, 2016, 1 to 4 pm , at Adam's Taphouse Grille in the Banquet Room, 219 N. Fruitland.

Arrangements are in the care of Holloway Funeral Home, PA, 501 Snow Hill Road, Salisbury, MD 21804. Please visit www.hollowayfh.com to express condolences to the family.

Dear Cora, Jeffrey and Lowell,
We are so sorry for your sudden and deep loss. We treasure listening to Jim's arranging and guitar talents on the cd's he gave us in October. Tello loved playing gigs with Jim thru the years and venues. We will miss our smiling, gentle tall friend. You've chosen a great picture!
We will be with you in spirit at Jim's Celebration of Life.
Sending our love and warm hugs,
Tello and Gail

One of Jim's favorite songs was "Our Love is Here to Stay," by George and Ira Gershwin. How appropriate. His gentle, kind and generous spirit make those who knew him say - "Jim, our love of you is here to stay." Tom Hehman `

Dear Cora, Jeffrey, and Lowell,
We all loved Jim. He will be terribly missed.
I will always remember with fondness that without fail he would say after our concerts, "Good work young man!"
Sincerely,
Jeff Schoyen

Cora, Jeff, Lowell....so very sorry for your loss. Jim was a great guy, a great guitar player, and a friend for many years. I was lucky enough to have many musical experiences with him, from RFD, to Denise and Denephews, to Swing Shift, even to playing duets with him on occasion. What a blast. I miss him already. Please accept my sincere condolences. He will be missed.
