LuVerne was born on the same farm that her father was born on northwest of Manning in Crawford County, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ on October 13,1924, at Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison, Iowa, by Rev. Frese and later confirmed on September 13, 1942, at Zion Lutheran Church by Rev. Schmidt. She received her education in Hayes Township No. 8 Country School. After completing her education she helped her parents on the farm and area neighbors until she moved to Denison where she helped in different homes.
On September 7, 1944, LuVerne was united in marriage to John Kohnekamp in Soldier, Iowa by Rev. Hoff. The couple made their home on a farm north of Berne, Iowa for two years, then moved to Charter Oak where she worked at the café and did house cleaning. They were blessed with the birth of five children.
LuVerne was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, baking, canning and hand sewing. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John on May 8, 1978; two brothers, Albert and Ralph Ewoldt; one sister, Edna Hester; one great-grandaughter, Tabatha LaDuke; one step-grandson, David Boland; and two daughters-in-law, Barbara and Blinda Kohnekamp. Survivors include four sons: Bill and his wife, Corlie; Vernon; Herman and his wife, Nancy; Jerry and his wife Jackie; one daughter, Julia and her husband, Maurice; twenty-five grandchildren, fifty-six great-grandchildren and fourteen great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Arla; one sister-in-law, Laverna; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, July 2, 2009 at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Richard Merrill officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Soldier Township, Charter Oak. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me", "How Great Thou At" and "I'm But A Stranger Here." Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Jeremy Kohnekamp, Kay Lynn Henkelman, Shelly Bergstadt, Marie Henkelman, Cindy LaDuke, Tammy Bridwell, Michelle Lima, Valerie Ellis and Sara Kragel. Pallbearers were: Jonathan Kohnekamp, Bill Kohnekamp Jr., Jason Kohnekamp, Dan Henkelman, Jeff Henkelman, Bill Henkelman, Mark Bergstadt and Kraig Ellis. The family invited everyone to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch at the church served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
