Carie Freimuth Obituary

Carie Ann Freimuth of Denver, Colorado, passed away on August 19th, 2018, after an 18-month battle with multiple myeloma. Carie was born on February 17, 1963, to Robert and Jolene Freimuth in Denver. She attended Machebeuf High School, followed by The Colorado College, where she received a B.A. in economics in 1985. Later, Carie received her M.B.A. from Columbia University in New York City. Carie enjoyed a happy childhood as a good student, an excellent pianist, and an active member of the Eskimo Ski Club. But reading was always Carie's favorite pastime. This love for books was fueled by an after-school job at Hatch's Bookstore in the University Hills Shopping Center and, during college, at McKinzey-White Booksellers in Colorado Springs. After graduation, Carie moved to New York City to pursue a career in publishing, starting at Avon Books. Carie rose through the ranks in sales and marketing at St. Martin's Press, Random House, and HarperCollins. She worked with authors including Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump, and she published the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Known World. And at Random House she met colleague John Hughes, whom she married on a snowy winter evening in 2004 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Denver. The newlyweds relocated from New York City to Denver and, in 2005, Carie and John welcomed their son, Joseph. Carie continued her publishing career for nine years at Waterbrook Press, and then moved in 2015 to a marketing role at FOCUS, a national non-profit based in Genesee. Their mission of helping college students reinforce their Catholic faith was the perfect expression of Carie's own Catholic identity and beliefs. Carie found great meaning in her work and cherished the friendships built with her like-minded colleagues. Carie was a talented cook and baker, skills she learned from her mother. No visitor to Carie and John's home ever left hungry, and many a kind deed was rewarded with a home-baked thank you from Carie's kitchen. She was a great giver of nicknames, and in return, her family lovingly called her "Little Miss Moxie" or "Big Dog." Carie was preceded in death by her mother Jolene. She is survived by her husband John Hughes, son Joseph Freimuth Hughes and stepdaughter Emily Hughes (Liam O'Brien); by her father, Robert; and by siblings Julie, Chris (Stacia), and Nancy (John Phillips). Carie's quick wit, extraordinary kindness, remarkable strength, and beautiful smile will also be missed by her niece Ella and nephew Will, as well as a large network of friends and family. Vigil Service, Friday, Aug. 24, 7 PM, Horan & McConaty Funeral Home, 1091 S. Colorado Blvd. Denver, CO. Family will be receiving guests prior to the vigil from 6 PM - 7 PM. Funeral Mass, Saturday, Aug. 25, 10 AM, Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, 2250 S. Harrison St. Denver, CO. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to FOCUS, to Clinica Tepeyac, or to the HeartLight Center.

She was a great friend and so warm, funny, smart, and a joy to be around. The many lunches we had at work helped make the work not so sttressful. She did that. She made you love life a little more.

Carie was so special. All who were fortunate to be her friend surely treasure our time with her. She was an amazing young woman, so compassionate, smart, funny wth a Joie de vivre unmatched. She met my friend John Hughes and they fell madly in love and had their son Joseph and John's daughter, Emily to build a life together. My wife Cynthia remembers Carie as a force of nature which she was. In charge, in business all business, in relationships just plain unassuming, fun, and marvelous. A leader. She was truly unique and special. You noticed her and walking into a restaurant with her, others did too. Not just her beauty but her grace, presence, and confidence. She made the lives of all who knew her a little better and a whole lot more happy.

I am devastated by the loss of Carie who was a treasured friend and colleague of mine at Penguin Random House. In fact, Carie hired me for a Times Books marketing manager position in 1993 which involved a job transfer to NYC and launched a new life for me and my family there for the next 14 years. I learned so much from Carie during my stint with Times Books and admired her smarts, incredible work ethic and above all her unflagging kindness. My heartfelt sympathies to Carie's husband and my friend John, her son Joseph and her extended family.

Julie and Freimuth and Hughes families,
What a beautiful obituary! I am so sorry for your loss. In high school, we had a friend group that included Carie and Julie. Similar to the sentiments in the obituary, I remember Carie as exceptionally kind, smart, beautiful, and faith-filled. I feel blessed to have known Carie! My prayers are with you!
