Carol Walker Obituary

Carol Nevens Walker died on August 20, 2014 at home in Denver following a 5 1/2 year battle with brain cancer. Carol was born June 22, 1958 in Denver to Thomas and Carolina Nevens. She grew up in Denver and attended Denver Public Schools: Slavens Elementary, Hamilton and Merrill Jr. Highs, and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1976. Carol went to the University of Denver, where her father taught Chemical Engineering and conducted research through the Denver Research Institute. She was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority and graduated from DU in 1980 with a BS in Accounting. Carol went to work after graduation for Arthur Andersen in Boston as a CPA. In 1982 she returned to Denver with Arthur Andersen and in 1984 went to work for Pulte Finance Corp. In 1986, she married Hunt Walker, an oil and gas landman. Carol was active in several non-profit groups, serving at one time on the boards of the Anchor Center for Blind Children and the Arapahoe Tennis Club, where she also served as president. Carol was most proud to be a member of a group of parents involved in the reopening of Slavens School in 1996, which has become one of the top-performing K-8 schools in Colorado. Carol played a key role in getting the approval of DPS to add the middle school at Slavens, obtain funding for Art education, and getting 4th graders excited to eat vegetables from the Slavens garden. Carol loved her garden and was a CSU Extension Master Gardener and a member of the Denver Garden Club. Carol was an active athlete and continued throughout her battle with cancer to play tennis and platform tennis, to swim, hike and ski, and to attend spinning and pilates classes. Carol is survived by her parents, Tom and Carrie Nevens, her sister Cathy (Jim) Kidder, her sister-in-law Lisa (Charles) Duke, her husband Hunt, and her children Hilary, Thad and Whit, and six nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Thursday August 28th at Christ Episcopal Church, 2950 S. University Blvd, Denver. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Cathedral, for the benefit of the Women's Homeless Initiative, where Carol was a volunteer, 1350 Washington St, Denver, CO 80203; The Colorado Neurological Institute- Patient Assistance, 701 E Hampden Ave, Suite 415, Englewood, CO 80113; or a charity of one's choice.

The bells in heaven are ringing with another angel coming home. I remember her ability to make you feel at home the first night I met her at rush back In '77. Hunt you were a blessed man having her as your partner in life. Lisa and Charles the Carney's are sending you thoughts and prayers to share with your family. She is free from pain and suffering as she joins the Heavenly Garden Club, where weeds don't grow and fertilizer smells like flowers! Sending hugs! Kathy

I carried a tennis racket. In JMAC at SOAR the summer of 1976. Carol asked me to play tennis, and our friendship began. Although we weren't in the same sorority , we remained friends, and played tennis together. She was someone I admired a great deal. I am so sorry for this tremendous loss, and send my condolences and prayers to the entire family.
