Edward Maryon Obituary

Edward Deloy Maryon 1931 ~ 2005 Edward Deloy Maryon, 73, passed away March 9, 2005 from complications of Parkinson's disease. Born April 5, 1931 to Edward Baker and Helen Sorenson Maryon, oldest of three children. He grew up in Salt Lake City, graduated from East High in 1948 and received a BFA from the U of U, 1952. Ed served in the Army at Fort Ord, CA, 1952-54. Married Patricia Anne Bushman in 1953 (later divorced). Married Judy Kurtz (1985). Ed received an MFA from the U of U in 1956 and began teaching art, 1957. He was appointed Chair of the U's Art Department (1962), Acting Dean of the College of Fine Arts (1964), and Dean of the college (1966), serving in this position until 1981. He taught full-time until his retirement (1991). He particularly enjoyed teaching an annual watercolor workshop in Monterey, CA for over 30 years. Ed's influence as father, husband, teacher and friend was profound. He had an uncommon ability to see and create beauty in his paintings, homes and gardens, and shared that talent unselfishly. His gentle style, dry wit and generous nature endeared him to many, including his physicians and caregivers. A thank you to all and at the U of U, VA Nursing Home and Hearts for Hospice who provided loving attention. He is survived by his wife, Judy; sisters, Joyleen Smith (Doug) and Gaylo Merrill (Rulon); children, Annie Brewer (John), Ed Maryon, Beth Whittaker (Mark), Dan Maryon (Dorothy), Don Maryon, Kris Harvey (Ian), Robin Johnson (Andrew), and Jane Harvey (Nephi); step-children, Ken Kurtz (Carrie) and Kathy Nichols (Cary); and 27 grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Ian Maryon Brewer. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 14, 2005 at 11:30 a.m. in the Union Fort 4th Ward Chapel, 6710 S. 1300 E., Midvale. Friends may call Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Mountain View Mortuary, 3115 E. 7800 S. (Bengal Blvd.), Salt Lake City and at the church on Monday from 10-11 a.m. Interment, Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Parkinson's Disease Assn, 30 N. 1900 E., Room 228, SLC, UT 84132, or to ERDC, U of U Health Sciences Center.

Everyone is unique, of course, but some individuals are more unique than the rest of us. Ed was more. I was lucky to have gone on nine safaris to Monterey with him and Judy. There are dozens of photos to prove it, but more important are the many memories that endure: all the great companions on these jaunts, the gorgeous scenery that seemed so daunting to try to paint, dinners at the Clam Box and other delightful restaurants, the sea air, getting just the right tip from Ed to make my stumbling efforts better. My heart sings out "Those were the days" and they were and they still are as long as we remember. "I'll remember always" and it goes without saying "Thanks for the memories."

Judy and family. I thought that the funeral went so well! Ed does have such a great sense of humor, of which I was not totally aware of until today. It just seemed so cool to be able to laugh at a time like this! I will always remember playing board games with Ed on New years evenings. Love, Richard

I first met Ed in the summer of 1957 when my wife Phyllis and I entered Ralph Reynolds' Studio. Ed's art and person were a source of

inspiration to us for all of these years. And so it is with profound regret that I reflect upon the loss of this gentle giant of art and life.

Dear Judy & Family,

Your wonderful Ed Maryon touched the lives of innumerable people with his marvelous talent as an artist and his quiet, gentle manner as a teacher. I took a few private lessons from him before I attended my first Monterey Workshop in 1983 (and ten more workshops after that). At the first lesson that Ed was playing background music by Bach, my favorite composer, and I remember thinking that Ed's paintings were like the intricate patterns of baroque music made visual. I have two of his originals and several prints hanging in my apartment which are a constant source of of wonderment and inspiration.

Ed had an amazing ability to look at a student's painting, even if it appeared to the student to be a disaster, and immediately point out the good in it, and suggest ways to improve it. His gentle, quiet explanations and demonstrations encouraged and inspired me.

On our trips to Monterey, Ed always knew the best painting sites, the best galleries and the best restaurants to visit. He was always patient and willing to help with anybody's problems.

I have delighted in seeing the imaginative architectural designs and interior decorations of the several houses that Ed and Judy created over the years and enjoyed the wonderful open houses held there. Also, the recent book created and published by all of you is truly a work of art and something I will always treasure.

I hope that you, I and the countless people who were touched by Ed's life and who will deeply miss him, will be comforted by the beautiful memories of him and the great treasures he left with us all.
