James McNamara Obituary

James John McNamara
"Jim"

Jim McNamara, a smiling Irishman and proud Marine, died August 6, 2007, from
complications of esophageal cancer at University of Utah Health Sciences
Center where he spent most of his professionalcareer.
He was born in Salt Lake City, January 8, 1933, to John and
Frances McNamara, graduated from Judge Memorial High School, and received his
BS, MSW and Doctor of Social Work from the University of Utah. He served as
director of the Department of Social Work at the U of U Health Sciences Center
for 25 years and was a professor in the Graduate School of Social Work. He
retired from the United States Marine Corps as a full Colonel after 30 years
of service.
Jim was a loyal Beta, a U of U athlete and a life-long Ute fan. He loved the
beaches of Coronado, California and sharing the condo in St. George with his
family. "Don't forget to turn off the water!" Jim treasured friendship. He was
eager to share a good laugh, a meal with friends or just a dry martini. Go
Utes! Semper Fi!
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Roselee Norwood, five children, their
spouses and 11 grandchildren of whom he was so proud and deeply cherished:
Maureen James (Rick), Brian and Caitlin; Tom McNamara (Suzanne), Anna and Dan;
Cas Eyre (David) Hannah and Will; Megan Trapletti (Mike) Erin and Christina;
and Jane Thomas (Robert) Elise, Jack and Elizabeth and also by brothers Jack
(Patsy) and Bernie (Rose Marie) and nephews Stephen, J.J. and Matthew.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, August 17th at 4 p.m. at St.
Catherine of Siena Newman Center, 150 So. University Street. Immediately
following, join us to toast the life of a good man at an Irish Wake at the
University of Utah Alumni House, 155 So. Central Campus Drive. Friends may

Hi Roselee,

I was truly shocked to learn of Jim's death of late. Had I learned earlier I would have gone to his funeral, services, and Irish wake. I am sorry I was not in attendance.

Himself was a great and kind man. He is missed by many including myself.

Sorrrowfully,

Rosalie and family, My prayers and the prayers of the Hibernian Society members are with you in your time of loss. Jim was a mainstay and a significant presence in those early years of the St. Patrick's Day Parade. Without his presence, there probably would not be be a St. Patrick's Parade in SLC. Jim and I became friends at Judge in the grade school years. We shall miss him.

PAT AND I CHERISH THE TIMES WE HAD WITH JIM.HE WAS ALWAYS SO FULL OF LIFE AND OF COURSE IRISH BLARNEY. I ENJOYED PLAYING GOLF WITH JIM BUT MOST OF ALL I REMEMBER OUR CONVERSATIONS. JIM NEVER SEEMED TO LET HIS VERY FORMIDBLE PRESENCE OVERWHELM YOU WHEN HE SPOKE. YOU FOUGHT IT TO THE END COACH. ENJOY YOUR STAY!

About 20 years after we first met at Quantico, our paths crossed again one summer at Camp Pendleton. We became, with our spouses, best of friends, visiting one another in Salt Lake, St. George, San Diego and Coronado. Those happy times together will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. We share grief at your loss with Roselee and your family, but know that you are at peace with Our Lord.
