Leon Peterson Obituary

Leon Peterson
June 13, 1938-Nov. 21, 2020
A hero to so many of us, an indelible imprint left on more people than we can imagine, and with his loved ones attending him, Leon Peterson at long last went home. Diminished and reduced physically by the effects of Parkinson's disease, a disease which he battled for over 20 years, he remained a giant amongst us until the very end. He never could be kept down.
Leon was born June 13th, 1938 in Lehi, Utah to Lee Robert Peterson and Donna Eliza Boyack Peterson. Shortly after coming into the world, Leon and his mother found themselves alone without a father or a husband. After 7 formative years in Spanish Fork with the love and support of cousins and extended family, Leon and his mother moved to Salt Lake City as she remarried a widower, Burt Greenwood. They landed in Sugarhouse, across the street from the old prison, now Highland High.
Though initially an adjustment---a new family, step-father and step-siblings JoAnn, Pam, and Brent --- Leon adapted and thrived. It was here that Leon's world started to expand. He found the local Edgehill Ward and quickly became a gym rat playing basketball, making friends and helping out with the concessions. It was there an early mentor who upon seeing Leon's interest in basketball, encouraged him and maybe, more importantly, gave him his lifelong nickname. "We'll call you Pete." And they did! To his friends, he was always Pete.
As Leon matriculated through Irving Junior High and on to South High School, sports became a big part of his life. But not at the expense of part time jobs. From selling nightcrawlers to the fishermen driving up Parleys Canyon, to stock boy at Harward's Variety Drug Store, Leon loved to work! It was after a stint as a salesman at Bud's Duds in Sugarhouse that Leon really started to pay attention to his own wardrobe, a hobby he enjoyed the rest of his life.
Then followed a move to Millcrest Road in Olympus Cove. Leon always appreciated his step-father for this move and how it helped broaden his horizons, socially and otherwise. From there Leon began his college experience at the University of Utah.
Leon always thirsted for more in life. At the U, in addition to the rigors of academia, Leon felt a social component was missing. He found it at the Sigma Chi Fraternity. More than anything, Leon appreciated the many lifelong friendships he made while there.
After speaking at over 50 friend's Mission Farewells, (it is here the family suspects he fell in love with the microphone) Leon decided he should serve and was assigned to the British Isles mission in 1958. There, many life lessons were learned and a testimony was confirmed.
Upon returning home, an introduction was made on the steps of the Chi Omega House. This is where Leon met Karen Fotheringham, a recent graduate from Olympus High.
They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on July 31, 1964. The rest is history. It's not completely accurate to say that Karen merely "held on for the ride", but it is fair to say that when Leon promised to "show her the world" it was in no way, shape or form an understatement.
And Leon did not waste any time. Showing Karen "the world," began with their honeymoon. Money was made and saved by selling snowcones at summer parades, doing janitorial work at downtown office buildings and overseeing paper routes for a number of paper boys. Then, a trans-continental roadtrip ensued in their VW Beetle, to where finally, a trans-atlantic flight took them from New York to England. England was their jumping-off point to the rest of Europe and after 3 weeks on the road they arrived home to their apartment virtually penniless. But with no regrets.
Leon graduated with an MS degree in Biology and an MBA from the University of Utah in 1967. Years later, he went back to the University to teach Business courses with an emphasis on real estate, thereby training his "future competition."
The "social experiment" at Indian Springs came next. Pete and Karen and great friends Bob and Kathi Garff and Clark and DeAnn Robinson, opted to convert an abandoned Country Club shell into three homes. It was Leon's first construction job and thankfully most of the trades were subbed out. It was here the three couples raised their families-to the delight of every one of the offspring.
Travel, and the perspective gained from travel, was a constant theme for Leon, so much so, that he and Karen took their family everywhere. The 70's had the family visiting the USSR and the People's Republic of China, the 80's South America, Australia and Scandinavia, with the Alps, Africa and the Middle East sprinkled in liberally here and there.
Working hard, and playing hard was a creed Leon lived by. Squash and tennis helped him manage the pressures at work while the annual Christmas trip to Maui helped him re-charge his batteries for the coming year.
Professionally, Leon made his own way. With the help of a lot of good people he established Peterson Development, a real estate firm that has developed shopping centers, office buildings, warehousing and residential neighborhoods throughout the western United States. More importantly, Leon is proud of the company that he built which has provided jobs and impacted countless lives. His children are even more proud of the way he battled through the ups and downs of the real estate cycles and, despite tremendous odds to the contrary, came out on top.
Leon left a legacy with the Sigma Chi Fraternity. By the time Leon was in his 60's he had seen repeated attempts by Alumni to renovate the aging Beta Epsilon Chapter House. All campaigns fell short. Leon decided that was enough and assembled, coordinated, twisted arms and gently
nudged generations of alumni to donate to the cause. His motive: to perpetuate the lofty ideals of the fraternity and continue to provide a place for students to pivot socially. Many individuals
stepped forward and contributed but it is fair to say that without Leon's sheer force of will bringing everything to bear, it just would not have happened.
Leon served on many Boards and contributed in a myriad of ways to different causes. The Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, the First Security Bank Board, the University of Utah Alumni Board as well as the Honorary Chair of the School of Music at the U that he and Karen co-chaired. The Gifted Music School is an organization Leon and Karen are particularly fond of and hope to see flourish. The family thought it fitting that in 2004 he was honored with a Father of the Year award.
Leon's contributions to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints were many. Through service as a Bishop, in Bishoprics, and on High Councils Leon did honor to his faith and to society but it is fair to say that family was always the center of Leon's universe. Work was a top priority and demanding, as were accepting Church callings-but never at the expense of family or family time.
Leon is survived by his wife Karen Fotheringham Peterson, their five children, Brandon Leon Peterson (Katie White Peterson), Justin Vaun Peterson (Elizabeth Romney) Ryan Burton Peterson (Coco Warner) Barrett J Peterson (Allison Moore) and Ashley Brooke Peterson (James Clayton) Beck, their 23 grandchildren, as well as his siblings JoAnn Greenwood Black, and Brent Greenwood, both of Salt Lake City.
We gratefully acknowledge the tireless care, devotion, and love Siahi and her husband Tevita Makaafi provided to our father and mother for the past 2 ½ years.
Leon was preceded in death by his mother over 60 years ago. We weep at the thought of their reunion.
Leon was also preceded in death by his sister Pam and step brothers Darr and June Greenwood as well as his daughter-in-law Jennifer Thompson Peterson.
A socially distanced viewing will be Friday, November 27th from 6:00-8:00 pm at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South, SLC, UT 84108.
A private funeral service will be held Saturday, November 28th at 12:00 pm at 2795 Crestview Drive, SLC, UT 84108. To view the service, the link is as follows:

From arranging the magnificent talent of students and professionals to even arranging to bring high quality pianos to the events, he gave his all to elevate our spirits through breathtaking music. Leon has been a positive influence in my life. His sense of fairness and honesty helped me form my standards when I started in construction 45 years ago. Although I haven’t seen Leon for many years his passing leaves a feeling of emptiness in me. My condolences to the family at this time of loss.

Karen - My time with Pete was very brief - the few days Katy and I spent with the two of you in Salt Lake and in the mountains near Park City. Though he had never met us, Pete made us both feel as though we were part of your family - hospitality wise and by sharing his life experiences and passions. He was a VERY impressive person and I offer my heartfelt condolences to you and all of your family.

We are grateful to have been touched by his great example for many years. He is a legend. We love how he brought the finest music into our lives in such a generous way. Karen is an angel and their kids are truly wonderful people. Leon's very finest traits are displayed in all the children, and now, grandchildren. It is an honor to know the Peterson family. We love you.

Fare Thee Well, Noble Pete — My True and Only-Ever Big Brother.
Rest assured, Precious Friend. We’ll all be along shortly.

29 November 2020
Dear Karen and Your Resilient and Remarkable Peterson Family:

The Sig grapevine left word of Pete’s passing. My Heart profoundly aches from the knowing. Decades of Distance between us — chasing world-apart Dreams and Career Paths — never once diminished my unshakable Affection, Respect, Trust, Admiration and Love for Leon. He was as Family to Me and Mom and Dad.

Through this Veil of Grief, long neglected Recollections begin to surface reminding me of the simple Joy, Passion, Celebration, Faith and Mischief of our shared Mythical Days Together. Heady Times, for sure. Surrounded by Love and Music. Life Fresh and Intoxicating. All things possible. Oh yes, let us not forget the image of a Cool, Young Pete Peterson reduced to a quivering hunk of goo — whenever Fetching Coed Karen laser focused her Beatific Smile upon him. Worthy Partners, Sweethearts and Companions Evermore. How fortunate am I to have been there when it all began?

Today, we are tagged as “Privileged.” It’s True. I Feel unbelievably Privileged to name Pete and Karen and so many Extraordinary Others of our Generation as Eternal Friends and Soulmates. ~ When last I spoke with Pete, he again fondly called me “Little Brother.” I can imagine no Greater Honor. For all his 80 years, Pete personified what it means to be — the Best Man. I suspect he’s only just now getting Warmed-Up Again. Brace Yourselves!

May God our Father be at your side — may you soon find a measure of Peace and Comfort within your Priceless Memories — the Grand Music and Artists you Inspired — the Blessed Promise of Pete’s Shining Essence with You. Always.

Much love,
Paul Engman (aka Fledney)

Karen,
I can't imagine a world without Pete! He would spend hours just visiting with me before we ever talked business. He always made me know that he cared about me and my family and only then would he get to the purpose he intended to discuss. Then we would suddenly revert back to what always seemed most important to him. His family, my family and all of the people he loved!

So deeply sorry for your loss!

Anastasiya Magamedova

November 28, 2020

Our family was very lucky and honored to meet Leon Peterson and his wife Karen about 10 years ago.
Our first meeting took place after one of the Gifted Music School's concerts, in which our daughter, Anastasiya Magamedova, took part.
We are a family of immigrants from Tajikistan (Central Asia) that immigrated to the United States in 2008. We have always set ourselves the goal of giving our children a good education so they become valuable citizens of America.
Our daughter, Anastasiya Magamedova, continued her music lessons at the Gifted Music School, which was created with the support of Leon Peterson and his wife Karen. Seeing Leon at concerts, we always saw him as a very close and dear friend. Every time he remembered to ask about our daughter and our family. He was always a very joyful, bright, and genuine person with an open heart–always ready to help if needed.
Thanks to Leon, our daughter Anastasiya was able to continue her musical education at the most prestigious music school in America, The Juilliard School, of which she dreamed since childhood. Our daughter has always been immensely grateful to Leon for this generous help. She tried her best to bring him joy with succeeding in her goals and achievements, which he supported passionately.
Each time she came home to Utah from school or musical travels, she always tried to organize a concert to show Leon and all those who believed in her with her music, how much she appreciated their help and support in her aspirations to become a professional musician.
We are now reminded of Anastasiya's last concerts in Utah, which Leon attended— the Christmas Concert in 2019 at the Waterford School, as well as a concert that she gave on her birthday in honor of Leon Peterson in January 2020. He was always in the front row – her number one fan and supporter. When she was far away from home, he was only a call away. Every time he'd say "we'll keep in touch", and they would soon talk on the phone again.
Unfortunately, this worldwide force majeure did not allow Anastasiya to come back to Utah in October 2020 to give a concert for Leon Peterson and to support him morally in his efforts in the fight against the debilitating illness. Now, she would give anything to have been able to play for him one last time.
We deeply mourn with the
Peterson family. He will forever remain in our memory and in our hearts as an example of kindness, honesty and decency, as a person who loved life, people and was always ready to help anyone in need. He was a worthy member of the Church and by the example he lead in his life, he inspired all those lucky to have been around him.
The Magamedov Family.
(Joseph, Irina, Anastasiya, Arthur).

Karen and family,
When we moved to the neighborhood over 30 years ago and became your backyard friends, the two of you were among the first to welcome us. Pete always had a kind word and a good story to share. His life story is amazing and he battled Parkinson's with grace. It was inspiring to watch him play tennis even with his disease. He was truly an example of his legacy.
Our condolences to you all during this difficult time.

My sympathies to the Peterson family. It's a sad, yet happy time to think back on Pete's life and all that he did. When I was younger Pete was the "older guy" everyone wanted to be like. He guided so many of us to the "U" and Sigma Chi and then Missions, a formula that has worked pretty well over the years. I will always remember him as a a dynamic, fun, successful guy who was friends with everyone. He was a great influence on my life and on so many others. We'll miss you Pete, but you know we love you.
All honor to your name, Bob Harrington

To dearest friends, Karen, Brandon, Justin, Ryan, Barrett and Ashley and to your precious companions and children,
We love each of you beyond words and are grateful for your love and closeness as next door neighbors on Dickens Place for so many years. Pete's infectious influence lives on in all of us who knew him well. Truly, Pete lived as Paul taught -- He was "fruitful in every good work."
Karen, you and the kids were always Pete's greatest assets! Your combined work and exemplary generosity to the music world was impressive and lives on in the lives and talents of each artist who you so unselfishly nurtured.
Pete's courage and faith never allowed his Parkinson's disease to define him -- his "people building strengths" just expanded -- reaching every grandchild and all of us he tenderly touched.
We will miss Pete's brightness and personal ministering visits, but we will always feel and reflect upon his pure heart and positive influence in our lives.
We are so sorry to be away from Salt Lake City, but so appreciated Barrett's tender phone call last week.
Blessings of inner peace and the assurance of Eternal joy, to a beautiful family we will FOREVER LOVE !

I shed some tears and let out a little gasp last Sunday when I heard the news of his passing! Such a great man that did so much good in the world! I so enjoyed growing up down the street from you guys and watching the great friendship between my parents and Pete and Karen! I have always felt great love from your family and have many fond memories swimming in your pool, dinner group outings, our parents sharing an anniversary and their many trips and tennis games, music performances at the U of U and your cabin etc. I loved Pete’s humor and often got a kick out of his visits to our house for various reasons. I’ll never ever forget his question he asked Matt and I at a wedding shower for us about “premarital interdigitation” and how thoroughly embarrassed I was! He’a the best! We love you all and wish you all much peace in the days to come! I hope Pete and my Mom and Steve and Bob Garff are all up there playing a heavenly game of tennis! I really don’t like that we have to remain on the earth without them here! Love you all and thinking of you! ♥

Karen, Brandon, Justin, Ryan, Barrett, Ashley,
Sending my warmest condolences for the passing of Leon. I think he was one of the greatest men I have ever known. He was always thoughtful, kind and caring when I saw him. I have always been impressed with how passionate he was about the things in life that he cared about and then gave generously.

I have many great memories of Leon at dinner group events and family trips with the Petersons. I was fortunate to attend many musical concerts at the U, his cabin and up in the mountains at the Yurt. Leon and Karen have been amazing friends to my parents, Gary & Suzanne Larsen and I am so grateful for that friendship. Thank you Leon, for the impact you had on my life, the example that you have set for my family and the incredible legacy you have left for the world. Sending much love to all the Peterson family!

“Pete” was like a father to me- always encouraging and a beloved friend. I loved serving with him at the University of Utah School of Music Advisory Board where he served with Karen as co-chairs and championed student musicians. He held concerts with “The Best of the Best” in the Univ of Utah Libby Gardner Hall for his closest friends which we enjoyed immensely.

The Deseret News coined a title for Pete that I think is most fitting: “The Patron Saint of Musicians”. He loved hosting private concerts in his home, his home In Riversong, at the top of a mountain, yurts, or at the U. He featured students and music professors performing Pete’s “Greatest Hits”.

I will miss Pete’s smile, and his genuine love for friends and people.

I have such love for his children- Ashley, Ryan, Justin, and Brandon, who have been life long friends at Indian Springs. Early summer mornings growing up were filled with the sound of Pete’s tennis racquet hitting balls and rallying his kids in games, and watching Pete turn on and off the sprinklers by hand. He cherished traveling with his family all over the world. And all over the world they went!

I’m forever grateful for Pete in my life. He’s a champion, a friend, and second father to me. Thanks, Pete, for living life to its fullest. You brought good food, good music, and great friends together. It has enriched us all.
Love,
Craig and Melissa Garff Ballard

I was very sad when I heard of Pete’s passing. I got to know Pete while attending an evening Real Estate class at the “U” . My first experience and awe was while attending his class as a student. He would ask everyone their name if they asked a question. He would then remember your name and address you by your name the next time you spoke with him. Needless to say over time he became one of my heroes. Later on we became neighbors and friends. He is definitely a man of many talents; a man I’m glad to have gotten to know. I learned also from him by the example he was. He and
Karen raised a beautiful family, a family to be proud of. Indeed one of God’s special souls!

Karen and Family
Nancy and I wish you the very best at this time with the passing of Leon. He was a great man and certainly does deserve plenty of admiration and respect for what he accomplished.
I consider myself one of his truly long time friends as we met as 4th Graders at the Garfield Elementary School in Sugar House. Being the same age we attended Garfield Elementary, Irving Junior High, South High School and the University of Utah at the same time. We pledged at the Sigma Chi House together, and are both returned British Missionaries. He was always very busy, highly motivated with great integrity. He had many friends and clearly knew where he was going and how he was going to get there.
Leon's obituary as written is exactly a description of the way I will remember him.
Of course there were a number of personal discussions and experiences we had that are meaningful and of course some of them even being on the comical side. Always memorable.
Leon's family, friends, business associates were always so very important to him. His commitment to the Sigma Chi Fraternity and the Gifted Music programs in Utah are each evidence of things he leaves as a legacy which will be remembered for a very long time.
Nancy and I have always been welcomed as good friends by Leon and Karen as we have met at various concerts, Church events, Sigma Chi gatherings and other events. We thank you for this friendship.
May The Lords choicest blessings be with you at this time.

We will greatly miss you, Leon. The many times we spent listening and discussing music, talking politics, eating gourmet meals and being with friends and fraternity brothers made our lives richer. The moments that matter were numerous. We wish we could have had more. "Pete," you were one of a kind. You were the brother I never had, You spoke at my missionary farewell in October of 1962 and you mentioned something that has been an inspiration to me. It reads: "Far better it is to do mighty things , to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither suffer nor enjoy much because they live that grey twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat." You were what people call a finisher. And what you started turned into a great success. You were among that elite group who had a wonderful spouse who was always by your side. Who could ask for anything more greater? Thanks for being a supreme friend to Bette and me. Our lives are richer because of you and we look forward to seeing you again as we travel through the next exciting phase of eternal life. Larry and Bette Jackstien

Dear Karen,
Jon met Leon at Sigma Chi when they were in college and was so happy to reconnect with him when we moved back to Salt Lake. I met you both then, too, but it was later when we attended your outstanding concerts that we got to know you better. Thank you for those wonderful concerts - not only for the beautiful music, but also for the friendship. I was always so impressed of the good you were doing to encourage the performers' music and that Leon could remember everybody's name to introduce us. You two certainly have made a huge contribution in the community. Leon will be missed, but greatly remembered. I hope you are doing well.

The Scriptures ask, "What manner of men ought ye to be?" Like Leon, of course. Someone who rose from humble beginnings to accomplish great things, maybe his greatest was sharing his success with so many others. He developed properties and friendships with equal aplomb. The perfect host, he was always so personable, always knowing your name and the right thing to say. Always generous with a compliment. Always ready with a story. He had the skills, the know-how, and the know-who to make things happen, and then became the who that made things happen. One example: gifted in many areas, he had no gift for music. But he and Karen became the chief supporters for the University of Utah Department of Music. and the enthusiastic and incredibly generous benefactors of the Gifted School of Music. They provided performance venues, financial backing, and their own applause to Utah's finest young musicians, doting over them as adoptive parents, and after Gifted School graduation sending some of them off to the country's best music conservatories, tuition in hand. He didn't slow down even when Parkinson's disease slowed him down, and he remained engaged in what he loved with whom he loved. We are sure God has projects for him in the next life. How fortunate for the Peterson Family to be presided over by such a man. Many, many thanks, Pete.

I would see Leon an the SL Tennis Club and Sports Mall. I grew up with Brandon, graduating the same year from Highland High School. I was always encouraged by the time Leon took to talk to me, take an interest in my tennis and encourage me. I went on to play tennis for BYU. I owe a lot of my support to Leon and men like him. He truly connected with me and cared about me, as I am sure he did for all of his kids friends.

Leon “Pete” was an incredible caring and giving neighbor and dear friend.
RiverSong was a very special place to Leon and I know in his declining health it brought him much pleasure to spend time here viewing the incredible Weber river from his beautiful home.
I look forward to sharing RiverSong Ranch with Karen and their wonderful children for many years to come.

We are proud to call Leon and Karen our friends and two of our favorite people. They have been warm hearted, generous and thoughtful to us personally as well as to the community at large. A favorite memory of Leon: at the end of a long and stern lecture on nutrition, from the far corner of the room, Leon said, "I'm just glad I was 80 before anyone heard of kale!"
Our love to Karen and the family. Sorry we'll miss the chance to see you on Friday as we're in Arlington, VA with members of our family.
We expect to be with you for the services on zoom on Saturday.

Karen, Brandon, Justin, Ryan, Barrett, and, Ashley, please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss.

In my lifetime, I have met very few great men, I am certain that I could count them on one hand, unfortunately, I have now lost one with the passing of Leon Peterson. When I met Leon in the early 1990s, I was a scared young attorney and real estate broker who was attempting to develop hundreds of acres of my family's farmland. We negotiated long and hard on our initial 110-acre contract and I put him in bidding wars against multiple New York Stock Exchange-traded home builders, but my heart told me to give him a chance. Wow, was that ever a wonderful decision!

Once I had found a man that I could have done the deals with on a handshake, we developed hundreds more of our acres over a decade-plus and I introduced Leon to other family and friends with hundreds and hundreds of acres of farmland, most of whom I never made any commission from but I slept soundly because I knew that they were dealing with a man who would only enter win-win transactions.

Love and blessings,

Suzanne and I send our love and sympathies to you and your family with Pete’s passing. Although a loss for your family, a blessing to know that this great man is free of pain and with loved ones. Brief passings over the years have always reminded us of how special the two of you are.

Karen, Brandon, Ryan, Justin, Ashley and Barrett, I'm so thankful "Pete" so generously put me on my path those many years ago when Peterson Development was thriving as a fledgling company. I made so many friends there that have lasted a lifetime and all because of your husband and father. We all loved Leon so very much. He saved me early on so many times and gave me a valued direction in which to proceed.
I'm sure he's already told those whom he met on the other side those famous words: "Let's make things happen"! Barbara and I love you all.

Karen and family, I worked for Leon at Peterson Mortgage, for over 4 years. I dearly loved working for Leon. He is the most honest and fair business man, I have ever known or will know. My dedication and hard work for Peterson Mortgage, was due to the great respect, I have for Leon. The world will not be the same for anyone, without him on this earth. Leon will always be a great memory in my life. I pray that the Lord will bless all of you, with everything you stand in need of. Leanna Johnstun

What a good friend and great example! One of our last times together was at your lovely ranch home on the river. In a room of about 40-50 people and showing effects of Parkinson's Disease, Pete, ever the gracious host, went around the room calling each person by name and making a witty and warm comment about each. What a guy!
Blessings to you, Karen, and to your family at this tender time.
