I came across your story online and read your obituary to Sergei, your beloved son. I am so sorry for your loss. Sergei brought a smile to my face and a tear to my eye all at the same time. If I read everything correctly, you had a celebration of life on his birthday. I don't know the kind of strength it took to do that, but I am a mom to a 19-year-old boy so I can only imagine. So tragic a loss to you and to the world. I'm so sorry, but I am proud of Sergei for the fight he did give for as long as he could. May he be whole and at rest now until you meet again.

I met Sergei when I was in the roughest part of my life, struggling with my own mental health. We played football together, and he was always offering me support and was the best friend I had. I ended up moving away and we lost contact, when I heard about what happened, I was saddened, but will always the kid who always smiled. My friend.
Prayers for you and your family

I met Sirgei during a hospital stay in Des Moines last spring. He was a great guy. Went out of his way to have his mom bring another lady in the hospital some denture cream.(very kind, great lady) He had never even met this patient, just saw somebody in need and helped. He was a great person and a great artist. A very intellect mind. I am so sad I wasnt able to attend his funeral or celebration of life. I struggle with some of his same mental illness and could relate to him on many levels. Sad story. Prayers to the family. Sirgei would have been very proud of his parents for exposing the mental health crisis for what it is. As a patient who struggles with mental health personally, I would like to say thank you for everything you are doing!

Dear Mary and Larry,
Your description of Sergei, and all that he taught you and others about living, has really touched my heart.
I believe his life and legacy will reflect who he was, his wisdom, and his strength. He is a teacher who will continue to educate policy makers and others, through your voices and ours.

I did not know your beautiful son. He was clearly, an amazing person.
I am a pediatrician in Oskaloosa. I just wanted to share my experiences with mental illness. When I did my pediatric residency, I rarely saw children with mental illness; and that was true in the first years of my practice. Now, I would estimate 50/75% of my patients have struggled with mental illness. The resources are VERY limited in Iowa; leaving health care workers and parents scrambling to help these kids.
I sincerely appreciate your family's willingness to share your experiences in the hope of helping someone else.
My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Mary and Larry,
First I want you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I can't even imagine what you're going through. We also have a son adopted from Russia. We adopted him when he was 5 but was like a toddler just learning to walk. We adopted him in 2001 and he is now 21. I see similarities in our son Victor and your son. Some of the same "disabilities". We have struggled since we brought him home to get the right medication and the right help that he needed. So many doctors just don't "get it". When or if you feel like talking more about our sons, you can contact me on facebook ....Tena Essary Weiland. I live in Fremont, IA. Just know that you will have my continued prayers. I am sad for you and your family but I am very happy for Sergei that he is now at peace with our heavenly father. If there's anything that I can help with, please let me know. Hugs and prayers. I just read Sergel's story and it was so touching. I am so sorry for the loss of this young man but I think he has left you all with so many wonderful memories. Many time people are afraid to share this kind of story, and so through this, you have brought awareness to depression, anxiety, PTSD and survivor's guilt related to his tumultuous childhood in Russia. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful young man's short life with all of us...I know he has touch many lives and I think his story will continue to touch many lives. Prayers, and blessing to you his family and to all his many friends.

I had the privilege of having Sergey in general music at the middle school. I will never forget his boisterous personality in the hallways and saying hello to him everyday. It troubles me that his past demons continued to follow and haunt him. I have no doubt that Sergey will be missed. Prayers for your family and other people fighting their own battles.

What an incredible tribute to the young man. Powerful. And the message is clear. Youth mental health issues are not going away. More funding is needed in Iowa to address and treat our youth. So sorry for your loss. Thank you for your inspiring tribute to Sergei and the call to action.
