Larry Kirkwood Obituary

Larry Thomas Kirkwood

Knoxville

Larry Thomas Kirkwood, son of Thomas and Frances (Sherwood) Kirkwood, was born October 4, 1943 in Knoxville. He attended the Knoxville schools, graduating with the Class of 1961. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City majoring in Philosophy. Larry received his master thesis at the University of Kansas with Aesthetics the Philosophy of Art.

Larry lived in Kansas City and later moved his studio to Florida and served as lecturer at the Atlantic University in West Palm Beach. In 1975, Larry was listed in Who's Who in American Art. He was also listed with honors in the International Who's Who in Cambridge, England. Larry taught silk screening in Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Larry returned to Kansas City in 1991 to pursue his art career, this time creating a program of body imaging. He traveled throughout the United States, taking his works to colleges and universities, working with the art students and lecturing. His program of body imaging developed into a self-help program called: Love your body and to be the best you can be as you are. His program was well accepted by both faculty and students and was invited to make return programs.

Larry was a lover of life. He had a ready smile and made friends easily. His heart was tender for animals and he had a pet since being a small boy.

Larry's health began to fail in March of 2011. He developed COPD with complications. He put up a brave battle each day and showed his appreciation for those who cared for him at Griffin Care Center where he was a resident and where he passed away on Monday, September 17, 2012.

Larry was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Kirkwood.

Left to honor his memory is his mother, Frances Kirkwood of Knoxville; his aunts, Martha Shivvers, Nora Lee Ingle and Charlene Kirkwood; and many cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 21, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church of Knoxville, with Pastors Lane Riggle, Brent Hanna and Cean Wilson officiating. Burial will follow services at Graceland Cemetery of Knoxville.

Visitation for Larry will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, September 20, at the Winfield Funeral Home. Larry's family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening.

A memorial has been established to Hospice of Central Iowa or Knoxville Dollars for Scholars. Condolences may be sent to www.winfieldfh.com.

Dear Frances,
Terry and I, and our daughters, Jessica and Lexie, want to let you know how deeply saddened we are at the loss of our friend Larry. All of us enjoyed so many wonderful times together ...many Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas and New Years with Larry are part of our family memories. Jessica, especially, has fond memories of spending time at Larry 's studio in Lake Worth as a child. He was always generous in sharing his art supplies and instruction as she explored her own artistic talents. Today, her own daughter, Josephine, is a budding and enthusiastic young artist, at the tender age of two and a half.
Terry's late mother, Julia, a great art enthusiast, also enjoyed many hours of discussions about art as we shared meals together. Every Christmas since he left Florida, we always looked forward to his creative and humorous holiday cards. He was a special and unique friend to us all. I know your grief is heavy, but I hope it is lightened by such happy memories. With love,Terry & Lucy Brown

Larry visited the Cottey College campus many times for the Body Image Project, always around "Love your Body Day." He had a powerful and positive impact on myself and our students through his art and message. We will miss him.

May you remember the happy memories as the lost of a special person hits home. I'm sure Larry is talking to God on all the different images HE has created and itching to mold more.

It is said that life and death are one thread, the same line viewed from different sides. If this is true then Larry wove one beautiful tapestry with his life. My prayers are with my Aunt Frances and our family. Cousin you will be missed.

I was fortunate enough to meet Larry last year. What a sweet man. He loved everyone who visited him and was so gracious. I know all of his classmates from 1961 will miss him terribly. My condolences to his mother, aunts and cousins.
