Bud Corieri Obituary

Bud Corieri

Ames

Eitlo "Bud" Corieri, 92, of Ames, died on Monday, January 14, 2013 at Mary Greeley Medical Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, 10 a.m. at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Madrid. Burial with full military honors will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th St., Ames, with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7 p.m.

Bud was born November 27, 1920 at High Bridge, Iowa, a small coal mining town south of Madrid. He was the son of Ulysses and Stella Adani Corieri. Bud served in the US Navy as a radioman in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He married Retha Santi on August 23, 1952 and they were blessed with four children.

Bud was an entrepreneur at heart. He sold televisions in Madrid and repaired televisions in their early years, was an International Harvester dealer in Pleasantville, IA and was a restaurateur in Ames where he owned the Safari and was notorious for making pizzas on Main Street. Bud opened the first bar in Campustown, The Cave Inn. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.

Bud is survived by his wife of 60 years, Retha, of Ames; children, Kimberly (John) Boeke of Ankeny, Rosalind (William) Paige of Abbeville, SC, Leslie (Diane) Corieri of Phoenix, AZ and Kelly (Andrew) White of Urbandale; 8 grandchildren and a great-grandson. Bud was preceded in death by his sisters, Rose Tripp and Mary Janovick.

As a show of sympathy, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. On-line condolences may be expressed at www.StevensMemorialChapel.com.

Little did I know that back in 60's that transporting a 100 pound of rice flour from Ames (I went to ISU)to Bud's pizza restaurant in Normal, IL (I was from central IL)would start my life's career in the bar and pizza business. A friend of Bud's had a failing restaurant in Cedar Falls near UNI. I left Bud's employment in March, 1968 and purchased on contract. Only through the teachings, examples and advice of Bud, Retha and Rose did I prosper. Thanks again,

It's been just over a month since my Dad passed away. I'm still attempting to come to grips with the reality that he is now with God. It was amazing how many family, friends, former business colleagues and others attended his Visitation and Funeral. My heartfelt thanks to all of you, including those of you who were unable to attend. The presence of you and the condolences printed on this site of his many former business colleagues are an incredible validation of the stellar businessman and entrepreneur he was in so many facets of the business world. As one condolence printed here said "with the Safari closing and Bud's passing, it truly is the end of an era in Ames". Truer words have never been conveyed. I love you, Daddy. My heart and soul feel your absence and loss.

I'm just thinking of my dad right now and grateful for all of the kind words and sentiments from family, friends, and even from people who had never met Dad.
Grazie mille'.

I had the pleasure of working with E. Bud Corieri for his very last "fixer-upper" house purchase. He was a very positive person & a great business man. Brings a tear to my eye ... I'm sure he will be missed by his family and friends because he was a truly great human being ...

Roz & Corieri family, a loss of such a strong member of the family is heartbreaking. It feels like the days are long & the loss is felt all day but remember he walks along the side of each of you. He watches over all of you & his presence is with you. I wish I could offer you comfort but words cannot do that unfortunately. My prayers for your family can help with your healing but each will move through this process on their own. Hold onto the memories, the stories, the family he built & that he walks along the side of each of you. In peace & prayer.

Uncle Bud was bigger than life and he lived his life to the final minute. I feel sad for those who didn't get the privledge of his love. My family was fortunately one of the lucky ones, he loved us and we loved him right back. We were blessed for sure to have been in his life and heart!

To the Corieri Family - I did not know Bud, nor did Bud know me, but when I read he was the owner of the Safari, it brought back many memories of my youth while I was a student Iowa State. The Safari was one of my favorite after-hours haunts. It sadden me when the Safari closed and now with Bud's death, it saddens me again to know that it is truly the end of an era. Bud and the Safari touched many lives that created many wonderful memories. You have my deepest sympathies. God bless you all.

I have heard so many "Bud" stories over the past year or two (hope those people post them), but it is obvious that Bud was a huge part of Ames' history. He will be greatly missed by so many. My heart goes out to Retha and the entire Corieri family.

Uncle Bud had a beautiful smile he shared in a heartbeat. And a strength in his character which made him the man he will always be. Too, with a love so strong for Retha and his family. Josh and I and our family loved him too. God bless him and all of you during this difficult time.

I worked with and for Bud in the 80's in a number of nightclubs that he owned. He was always quick with a smile and handshake. I learned SOo much from him, both by him physically teaching me and by observation. He was always ready to lend a hand or an asset-all you had to do was ask.

Every child should have the privilege of an Uncle Bud in their life! He loved us unconditionally and made each of us feel like the most cherished child on earth. I will miss him every day! Until we meet in heaven, may you rest in God's kingdom!
