Lucille Kelly Obituary

Lucille Frances Kelly FORT WORTH--Lucille Frances Mainland Kelly, 87, passed away Friday, June 22, 2018. MEMORIAL SERVICE: 10 a.m. Saturday, July 7, at First Congregational Church, UCC, 4201 Trail Lake Drive, Fort Worth, 76109. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, UCC, Capital Campaign. Lu was born in Port Hope, Ontario, to John Ross Mainland and Frances Reed Mainland. She grew up in East Providence, R.I. In 1952, she graduated from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, where she earned membership in Phi Beta Kappa and was elected to Bates College Key. For several years before her marriage, she worked as a chemist in Rhode Island. In 1956, she married Henry C. "Jim" Kelly. Lu, Jim and their three children came to Fort Worth in 1964 when Jim took a faculty position at TCU. The family remained in Fort Worth with the exception of sabbaticals in England and Canada. In 1978, Lu earned an MS in Environmental Sciences at TCU and then taught high school biology, chemistry, and environmental science at Fort Worth Country Day School, until she retired in 1991. During retirement, she enjoyed travel, community service, and time with family, especially her grandchildren. For the past six years, Lu and Jim lived at the Stayton at Museum Way. Lu held alumni leadership positions for Bates College. At First Congregational Church, she taught Sunday school, served on most committees over the years, and played in the handbell choir. She also served on the Board of South Central Alliance of Churches. Lu was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Mary Ann Engstrom. SURVIVORS: She is survived by her husband of 62 years; children, Luanne (Charles) Cullen, Nancy Kelly (Kenneth Forster), and Curtis (Diane) Kelly; grandchildren, Lindsay Kelly, Ross Kelly, and Rachel Forster.
