Henri Liogier Obituary
Service: Mass of a Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Cathedral, 1206 Throckmorton St., Fort Worth. Interment: Shannon Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation: Friends may call on the family 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Shannon Rose Hill Funeral Chapel, with a rosary at 7 p.m. You are cordially invited to a reception to celebrate and honor Dr. Liogier's life 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday at The Gardens Restaurant in the Botanic Garden.
Memorials: The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory of Dr. Liogier to the Celebrating our Past Building our Future Campaign to restore the cathedral for the Fort Worth Catholic Diocese.
Dr. Henri Alain Liogier 1916-2009 (Henri Eugene Liogier de Sereys Allut)
Dr. Liogier is responsible for over 100 scientific journal articles and over 30 books devoted to the study of botany. He published the quintessential work on the flora of Cuba, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, and these works are the foundation of botanical science for the Caribbean. During his life's work, he discovered over 300 species of plants all of which can be found at the New York Botanical Garden where he also served as a research associate. He was a founding member of the Academy of Science and first scientific director of the National Botanical Garden in the Domincan Republic. Dr. Liogier was recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship for Studies in Plant Science. He served as a research associate at The Adkins Garden and Research Laboratory at Harvard University. He was also the director of the Botanic Garden at the University of Puerto Rico.
In 1995, Dr. Liogier and his wife, Perpha, retired to Fort Worth where he became a research associate of the Botanic Research Institute of Texas and the Fort Worth Botanic Garden.
He was an active member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church in East Fort Worth.
Survivors: In addition to his significant contributions to science and botany, Dr. Liogier is survived by his loving family including his wife, Maria Perpha Mejia Liogier; daughters, Marie and Teresa and their husbands, Ken Weyback and Randle Harwood; and his grandchildren for whom he prepared the way, Luis Enrique, Edgar Frederick and Caroline Marie Weyback.

I am sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Liogier. We have never met but I use his works extensively in my research of Caribbean trees. I was constantly amazed by his energy and thoroughness in the production of his many volumes of botanical works.

Hoy en la mañana mencionaba al Prof. Liogier y me dije déjame ver en que anda. Que pena el haberlo perdido! Ya le avisé a mis hermanos Mario y Emil y también les enviaré el libro. Me encantaría verlas, quizás en las giras de universidades que tendremos con mi hijo menor que de seguro incluirá TA&M y otras en el área. Lamentando mucho la pérdida de nuestro querido y respetado Prof. Liogier.

Querida Perfa,
Sentimos mucho la perdida de Alain, el es parte de la historia de la Botanica en Cuba y el Caribe, muchas generaciones de botanicos se han formado y se seguiran formando teniendo como base su monumental obra.
Siempre vivira en el recuerdo de todos los cubanos que lo conocimos personalmente, que compartimos su bondad, su fortaleza de espiritu y su gran amor por nuestra tierra, lo vimos por ultima vez en el 2006 en el Congreso de Botanica en Republica Dominicana, siempre alegre y jovial dispuesto a tomarse fotos con nosotros , que tambien forman parte de la historia.

Con profundo dolor hemos recibido la noticia del fallecimiento del Dr. Henri Alain Liogier (Hno. Alain) este 9 de noviembre. El Dr. Liogier, quién nació en Francia, obtuvo su doctorado en la Universidad de La Habana en 1945. Fue co-autor de la importante obra Flora de Cuba, junto al Hno. León. Publicó además la "Flora de la Española", el "Descriptive Flora of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands" y fue autor de más de un centenar de otras contribuciones sobre el tema botánico, fundamentalmente relacionados con la Flora antillana.
Con particular agrado recordamos en estos momentos su último encuentro con botánicos cubanos durante el pasado IX Congreso Latinoamericano de Botánica en Santo Domingo, cuando el Dr. Liogier recordaba sus tiempos en Cuba y podía describir la vegetación de muchos sitios de interés botánico e incluso podía describir, con una brillante memoria fotográfica, la localización de alguna especies interesantes. La historia de la botánica en Cuba no se puede escribir sin mencionar la figura del Hno. Alaín.
La Sociedad Cubana de Botánica quiere hacer llegar a su viuda, la Sra. Perfa, y a sus familiares y amigos más cercanos nuestras más sentidas condolencias a nombre de todos los botánicos cubanos; quienes estamos consternados por la noticia.

Tia Perfa, Maite, Pily y todos sus nietos, recordaremos a Tío Alain como un hombre de bien, positivo, líder, ejemplo para todos y que junto a Tia Perfa, Tío Alain fue una cabeza de familia que fue padre y tío para todos los hermanos Mejia Abreu cuando por años no tenia la presencia de ese padre y madre con nosotros. Sus consejos y su amor incondicional para nosotros serán siempre apreciados. Todos recordaremos con mucho amor a esa figura paternal que fue Tío Alain. Dios lo tiene en su santa gloria y siempre seguirá con nosotros en cada uno de nuestros corazones. Que descanse en Paz.

Querida Perpha: La comunidad científica en Puerto Rico lamenta la partida de Alain. Pero celebra su fructífera vida. Alain escribió una página especial en la historia botánica de las Antillas, incluyendo a Puerto Rico. Siempre recuerdo a Alain con su sonrisa, sencillez y espíritu de servicio. Todavía en el herbario UPR mantengo esa tradición de recibir a todos con una sonrisa y mantener el espíritu de servicio y sencillez que le caracterizó.

Henri’s qualities as a human being are as impressive as his achievements in botany.
His kind manner radiated out to others and you enjoyed being around him because you felt accepted.
His conversations were filled with wit, humor, and thought provoking remarks.
He took great pride in his family and their achievements.
Everything about Henri seemed quiet. And although I never heard him raise his voice, you could hear the passion when he spoke about what mattered most to him: his family, profession, and his beliefs.
Most of all I’ll remember how polite and gracious Henri was to others.
My condolences to each of Henri’s family members both here and abroad. I know you feel a deep sense of loss.
