Albert Strouss Obituary

STROUSS Dr. Albert "Bud" or "Doc" A. Strouss died on October 23, 2010. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1924. He attended Cornell University and Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Strouss was a World War II veteran, who enlisted in the Cavalry, and later became a pilot. He was a practicing small animal and equine vet in the Columbus and New Albany area for 34 years. His greatest love was caring for animals. Never in his career did he turn away an animal in need, no matter the circumstances. Dr. Strouss was an avid polo player for the Mahoning Valley Polo Club and later the Del Rancho Polo Club in Columbus, Ohio. He is survived by his companion of many years, Sylvia Snabl. Together they enjoyed time on their beloved farm. He is also survived by his children, Patty Malin of Mason, Ohio, David Strouss of Ipswich, Massachusetts, and Sandra Strouss of Baltimore, Maryland; his grandchildren, Ashley, Samantha, Caroline, Allison, and Justin; and his former wife, Lillian Cadiff Strouss. Dr. Strouss will be truly missed by many, many friends, including Michael Hayes, and Jim and Eric Snabl. The family requests donations be made to either the Columbus Jewish Foundation, 1175 College Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43209; horse rescue organizations, either Victoria Goss, Last Chance Corral, 5350 US 33, South Athens, Ohio 45701; or Hope 4 Horses, Hope4Horses.org; c/o Tracy Strouss, 45 Candlewood Road, Ipswich, Massachusetts 01938. Arrangements made by Schoedinger Northeast Chapel.

Bud and Doc as we called him help mentor
a family down the road. Helping with our animals, being a role model and father
authority to 3 boys plus helping a mother and daughter through tuff times and also good times. He was so much part of our lives, even after we grew up. We all enjoyed visiting the farm
as guests or as workers. We all have fond memories and loved you Doc.

I met Doc two years after his initial stroke--he was in a wheelchair at the time. Through his strength of will, the man progressed to walking independently with a cane in addition to maneuvering the John Deere "gator" around his farm (to places where I could not have found my way back home on my own). It is my huge regret that I never knew Doc before his ability to speak was limited--he may not have always given us an answer, but we always knew he was present.

I know there was a huge crowd of wagging tails to greet him when he crossed "the rainbow bridge."

20 years ago I met Dr Strouss thru my wife. We were looking for a new kitten and a neighbor of his had a cat with a litter and they were seeking good homes for them. "Bud" had Sylvia take us over to pick out a kitten and after we got back to his farm he checked her out. She was full of fleas and he gave her a quick bath, her shots and said she was healthy so home we went. She is still in our household and rules the roost to this day. We have had numerous others as her companions but 'MISS KITTY' as we came to call her is still vibrant and content. Dr Strouss sure knew his animals..............he will be sadly missed by all. Our deepest sympathies to Sylvia and all his children and grandchildren. HOWARD & KAREN ROGERS-MILLER of New Albany, Ohio.

I am so saddened to hear of the death of Doc Strouss. He was our vet for many years when we lived in the New Albany/Johnstown area. He had the biggest heart for both animals and people and a great sense of humor also. When my daughter wanted a job at the Columbus Zoo at the age of 16, he asked if he could write a cover letter to her resume. She has now been there for 20 years. His death is a great loss.

To the family and friends,
Dr. Strouss was a great vet, you are right he never turned anyone away, in the blizzard of 1978 he made it to help horses on our street, he had to leave his car at the end of the street and walk 1/5th of a mile to get to them. he also was our dogs vet.

God bless,
